Default Any senior, please comment :The Purification of Politics Is an Iridescent Dream

Purging the dirt out of politics holds enormous significance as it helps a country in strengthening its core values and in adhering to its principles for the benefit of general public. There is no country in the world which could be categorized as an ideal state in terms of its domestic political system but surely there are various states, mainly in the West, which offer great examples of how to have a controlled political set up, resisting negative forces and absorbing positive ones. Politics in the developing countries of Asia and Africa has lot to learn from the Western model so as to pull itself out of the domestic and external challenges. The political fabric of a country need to align itself on such lines so as to bring equal opportunity for all, social well-being, political freedom and shared prosperity along with economic development. The vital role which politics could play in harmonizing a country’s development goals is neglected in most of the developing countries. Undoubtedly, political decision making has a direct relation on how well the development plans, envisaged by elected representatives, are implemented. If political environment is corruption free, states could easily and smoothly harmonize its development plans to its national and international goals without obstruction.

National integrity is directly proportional to the quality of politics prevalent in a particular country. Smooth political machinery contributes to building a strong nation capable of preserving its national integrity and prestige. On the other hand, rusty political machinery will rust the national values while decelerating the chances of prosperity of a nation. It is worth a while to mention that a robust political structure protects the national health of a country. A strong nation has the capacity to respond to its challenges in a manner par excellence which is possible only when it has a powerful foundation – a functional political setup free from ill elements connected with coherent state machinery capable of running such a set up.

Also, a healthy political participation is another charm of a firm political system. Politics needs to offer a level playing field for all. It could generate positive results only if efforts are made in the direction of national interests. Many democratic countries in the world do not have participatory political structure therefore the roots of democracy remains weak, where as the countries which have a participatory political culture, enjoys the fruits of democracy. Nature of politics varies with the extent of democracy in a country and participatory culture in the political circles. If political system strengthens democratic principles such as political participation and engagement, politics of a country will follow an upward trajectory thus bringing welfare to it

Moreover, better use of capital resources is possible when the state shows the will to transparently process these resources for larger public interest through discouraging any political maneuvering. Fair distribution of resources is the state’s responsibility but if a state succumbs to dirty politics than it becomes difficult to allocate these resources efficiently. For example, water mafia in major cities of Pakistan is directly involved in establishing its monopoly over water resources and challenging state’s writ in this regard. Political goons and gangsters are involved in misusing state’s resources through misappropriations for profiteering and side by side harming public interests.

Furthermore, effective state machinery could strengthen state’s writ and disallow political structure to be used against general public. Politics, which plays with the interests of public, could not last longer. Public stands against such forces when their tolerance levels cross the threshold. Politics over state resources is neither in the interest of the integrity of a state nor in the well being of general masses. General populace always suffers when state machinery is misused and their basic rights are violated through dirty politics. All in all, a garbled political set up damages state’s writ and exacerbate its challenges while arousing distrust among people towards government.

When a state is internally fragile, it fails to formulate any workable strategy to consolidate its position in global affairs. A state can only participate, as an influential player, in world affairs only if it has the wherewithal to do so. Dirty politics renders a nation incapable of aligning its national goals with international politics. Such a state remains obsequious and is dominated by powerful countries. Politics needs to bolster a country’s standing in international affairs as well as polish its domestic potential for confronting challenges. If domestic politics malign a country’s international standing, it is a warning sign for state to come into action against it by clipping the wings of evil forces disturbing the balance.

Additionally, a corruption free environment could only be enacted when political meddling in state affairs is discouraged. Such an environment is essential for solidifying state’s credibility and strengthening its institutions in performing its tasks transparently and productively. For example, if dirty politics permeate a criminal justice system then it would not only cause the real culprits of crime to go scot free but it will also undermine the system’s credibility as well. Purifying politics is, therefore, essential to restore the trust of people in the system and enhance its potential in performing at its best. India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and other South Asian states have corrupt political systems. Much of the rot in public service delivery in these states is due the poor state of institutions damaged by corrupt elements and dirty politics. For a country to achieve heights of success and glory, the trend of letting the corrupt elements cause immense harm to the political system, need to reverse

There are innumerable loopholes in the global political framework which have nurtured dirty elements in it. The presence of these garbled elements has induced immense damage to the overall global framework and has rendered it ineffective in playing a substantive role in resolving global issues. From the conflict of Kashmir to the humanitarian crisis in Syria, from the cries of children in Palestine to the misfortune of the poor in various parts of the world, the role of international political community in finding solution to these long standing issues is miserable. Mainly, the dirty politics of influential countries in usurping power and privilege and keeping the marginalized as much marooned as possible has caused the conflicts to linger on. The unprecedented number of global challenges could not be resolved unless the global community works collectively and sincerely in addressing them wisely by disallowing dirty politics to seep in.

It is an unfortunate reality that global political dynamics has altered in such a way that instead of collectively contributing towards shared prosperity, the influential states have used its power excessively and brutally in causing/doing more damage to the world than before. The aforementioned concentration of power in the hands of few states has also given it the authority to misuse it in any way without being held accountable for its use. Miserably and shamefully, these powerful states are the main culprits of almost all major conflict existing in the world. Politics is used as a tool to excessively exercise the power over weak states so as to keep them subjugated and usurp their capital resources by installing obsequious governments.

Another key aspect is the marginalization of poor states which is regarded as a significant loophole in global politics. Politics is used as a weapon by rich states to keep the under privileged in persistent subjugation so that they constantly enjoy hegemonic role in global politics. Excessive use of power by these hungry P 5 states has undermined fair play in global politics. Whether it is intervention in Afghanistan or bombing in Syria or violence in Palestine or brutal use of force against innocent Kashmiris, the major powers have always remained silent in addressing the plight of poor people. Due to such misuse of power, the poor countries have lost trust in international organizations, led by the very P 5 states, and their commitments in addressing the concerns of the marooned populace

Politics over distribution of resources has widened the gap between rich and poor states. World powers want to have a control over key strategic resources so as to exploit them for their own benefits. In order to achieve the objective of establishing their control over these resources, world powers use dirty power politics and tactics. While exploiting the weaknesses of poor states, these rich states forget even their commitments made at international level for respecting national sovereignty of underprivileged states. For example, American footprint in the name of fighting against terrorism in Afghanistan will continue as long as it senses Chinese rising influence in the region. Similarly, America wants to keep Pakistan and other countries in the region under its influence as well so that China’s policy, to have control over warm waters of Indian Ocean, does not succeed. These American political maneuverings and strategies, to keep poor South Asian nations servile to its policy, have given it the muscle to establish its control over them and their resources. Power politics never wins public support. A survey in countries where American aid is sent showed that local population do not see America as a favourable state due to its hegemonic designs and garbled politics

Moreover, International and regional organizations underperform because they are subservient to global power politics that respects the interests of only rich and powerful states. Organizations such as UNO and OIC have become toothless in fulfilling their objectives on the basis of which they were formed. The United Nations Organization has failed to resolve key high-priority global issues which are harming world peace. Similarly, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation has been unsuccessful in creating an integrated, peaceful and economically prosperous Muslim World. Power politics in global and regional organizations has served damaged their credibility in playing a substantive and productive role towards world peace
Adulterated politics has made world leaders incapable of finding workable solutions of global problems. Exacerbating terrorism in the World, particularly the Muslim World; aggressive Indian politics in Kashmir and its brutalities in the disputed Himalayan region; Americans clinging to Afghanistan to counter Chinese rise and many other such world issues have remain unaddressed because of the hegemonic mindset of world powers to keep the world under stressful conditions so that no nation, other than their own, rise to challenge their unscathed power. Draconian policies of these influential states have led the poor privileged states in achieving economic and social prosperity and political independence in making sound and interference-free decisions for their nations

There are various reasons for a nation to remove dirt from its political fabric. One of the major reasons behind it is to build the capability for taking national decisions and framing national policies without being dictated by others. When nations are independent, they are able to resist dictation from others and thus become capable to compete in the world in a healthy and prosperous way. It is imperative for a country to take stringent measures for restoring its national esteem by pulling itself out of politics that is responsible for hurting its national integrity and prestige. For example, Chinese policy of “non-interference” in the politics of other countries has made it strong enough to expend its resources and energies in building itself a global economic power thus enabling it to integrate itself with the global market subsequently benefiting its people to prosper

It goes without saying that unless the ghost of politics is bottled, the state machinery could not direct its resources to serve general masses. Only when state machinery is free from political maneuvering, it could concentrate on public service delivery. Nations rise when its leaders are honest, patriotic and resist succumbing to politics of any sort. Such leaders build effective state institutions and oil the machinery of public service delivery. A nation could not rise to the heights of glory and self-esteem if it allows filthy politics into its folds. Furthermore, it is essential to let the institutions work independently without external interference from political circles so that state resources are directed towards building a nation great and competitive at all levels.

At global level, states could collectively work towards a better world by resisting negative elements in political circles. There are innumerable global issues which demand serious attention of countries such as global warming, nuclear non-proliferation etc. Any action which is vested in harming global peace would ruin the world for offering a safe place for future generations. For example, decision of the Trump administration to withdraw itself from the Paris Agreement 2015 (for climate change) is mere a misuse of power for self serving interest. In the name of making “America great again” and “America First” policies, the US has taken a u-turn and has compromised its international commitments. If states resort to such actions then it would be a pipe dream to make the world a safer and healthier place for future generations. Working towards a better world is a shared responsibility of all world nations and it is high time that each nation realizes and works sincerely towards achieving the very goal.

In order to purify politics, it is immensely important to invest on defeating the factors which are responsibility for failure of states in achieving its national goals at domestic level and in fulfilling its commitments at regional and international levels. Visionary leadership, which is cognizant of the internal and external political challenges, could substantively work towards pulling a nation out of crises. Building a nation’s self-esteem and protecting its national prestige are top priority goals of a visionary leader. These goals help in defeating dirty politics and enacting a strong foundation for a nation’s dignified survival. For example, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel resisted playing politics over refugee influx from Syria and other war torn countries instead accommodated the victims in a respectable way. Such examples set a precedent/model for world leaders who use politics as a tool to harm humanity. The world needs to learn lessons from leaders, like Angela Merkel, for establishing a political order free from adulterants spoiling world peace.

Also, reinvigorating regional and international organizations by making structural changes to its framework could eliminate the loopholes thus making it effective. These organizations need to have the muscle to fulfill its goals and objectives. Purging the politics of self interested elements out of them could pave way for it becoming productive. The UNO could contribute towards ending conflicts in various parts of the world by diminishing power of veto-power holder states. History is testimony to the fact that veto power states have excessively used it for serving their vested interest. Similarly, bureaucratic structure of the UNO has become corrupt and its expenditures have ballooned giving rise to economic bubble inside the UNO thus rendering it incapable of investing major chunk of financial resources it receives on the uplift of the marginalized communities. Similar is the case with other organizations like the SAARC, the OIC, the Arab League, etc. Internal politics inside these organizations need to be catered by focusing more on how to achieve its key goals rather than succumbing to internal political pressure.

At domestic level, a strong national institutional framework along with political will of leader to sanction a corruption free environment could help to stop political meddling and maneuvering. By doing so, a state could restore the confidence of its people in the system and build an environment when general masses get opportunities to prosper. Social well being could not be achieving without resisting dirty politics in state affairs. A welfare state, where people lead a satisfied life, is the result of tireless state efforts for defeating corruption, malpractices, misappropriations, ill activities and the politics involved in nurturing these evil elements.

At international level, states need to work towards shared prosperity, world peace and economic integration by helping each other in making each other strong enough to serve public at its best. The foremost goal for making world a peaceful place for present and future generations could be attained by finding political solutions to key disputes, putting an end to rich-poor divide, protecting human rights and addressing global challenges like global warming and nuclear proliferation without letting power politics dominate these goals

In the end, it could be stated that history is testimony to the fact that misuse of politics leads only to destructive effects. Internationally, world peace is compromised and nation’s prestige is undermined when powerful states misuse politics for their self serving interests. Domestically, the dirt of politics weakens a nation in fulfilling its national objectives. However, if nations collectively and individually work towards purging politics out, it can successfully achieve the dreams of shared prosperity and world peace.
