Default Going against an essay topic?

Salam, someone knowledgeable please clarify this ambiguity. I had always thought that it was "ok" to go against a topic as long as it was justified to write against a topic. I was going though past thread of Essay 2017 paper for sake of nostalgia and I saw someone mention there that "you shouldn't go against the topic", unless the Essay is expressed in the form of question.

So, my essay topic was "feminism is not really a third world issue". I argued against it saying that "feminism is really a third world issue" or important third world issue. Was I wrong to go against the statement?

Someone knowledgeable please clarify this so aspirants don't commit mistake, if it really is mistake, in future as I couldn't find a thread dealing specifically with this subject. If it is ok to go against a topic, when is it justified? Although, I saw an outline by Sir Bilal on the same topic and he also went against the topic, I thought I should create a thread to have a complete sense of when it is right to go against a topic and when its not.

While writing an essay, though you can write either way but when it comes to CSS, you need to be very careful. You need to study the mind behind the topic of your selection. For example, take 'Feminism is not really a 3rd world problem", in this topic, the examiner, hailing from a 3rd world country, is expecting arguments that could confirm the thesis statement.... Don't ever go against the national interest (asdefined by the state institutions... Don't ever go against your national heroes nor contest any statement by a state institution.... And you should do it in a simple, comprehensible and fluent English that is grammatically correct. Regards

I agree with Adil. To add to what he said, remember that the examiner and the paper-setter usually have the same background and hence they are expected to think alike. If your paper-setter says "Feminism is not REALLY a third world issue" (i.e. Feminism darasal teesri dunya ka masla hai he nahi), the examiner will also be of the same opinion and would expect you to prove it by your arguments. If you want to go against it, you will not only have to show excellent argumentation, but also have to change the already made up mind of the examiner. This is an uphill task. So why not just tell the examiner what he already believes in himself instead of going for an adventure that can put your attempt at stake?

Thank you very much to both. I think opting gender studies clouded my judgement on this one.

It should have broadened your mind instead! Feminism is not really a third world problem, it's a global problem. Got my point? Regards

I disagree with Adil on this. I think "Feminism is not really a third world issue" means that the third world is failing even in the provision of basic human rights to women, let alone giving them equality via feministic ideals. The issues of women in third world countries are totally different from those championed by modern day feminism.

Let me give an explicit example. While the western feminists are fighting for the rights to "free the nipple", women in third world are struggling to get even basic amenities of life eg toilet, antenatal care etc.

Brother i think you have slightly misinterpreted it. I think this topic actually meant that third world countries suffer from multiple basic issues such as health, poverty, education, sanitation etc and feminism, in true sense of word and spirit, comes very low in the priority list to the extent of irrelevance. Hence, it is not really an issue of the third world countries. In short, more urgent issues that threaten the stability and existence of third world countries do not afford them with the luxury of debating or tackling gender inequality.

I had followed this interpretation when arguing in my topic. Although, I argued that it is as important as other issues. However, if someone had argued in favor of statement using either of yours or party popper interpretation, I think they would have passed. Not sure about Adil's interpretation but JWT interpreted it in similar manner to him but they entirely changed to essay topic to "feminism is not "ONLY" a third world issue" when "REALLY" was the codeword to crack the essay.

I am adamant...... I think the topic is open for interpretation but not that much to lose its flavour. Though I can write pages and pages for arguments' sake, but let's keep it simple: 'Feminism is not really (only) a third world problem'. Explanation:- let's ask some questions from our own selves 1. Has not the post modernism in the west wreaked havoc upon the family institution which has destablised the women? Family being natural to a woman? 2. What about the 'Radical Feminist Movements' in Europe, especially France? Is pornography (sorry for this but this is just an academic discussion, so, a one time exception.....) not a violation of women rights, where women are being presented as a showpiece/commodity? And this a purely western phenomenon, East is following suit though. I think these questions would suffice for getting to understand that women rights are as much violated in the 1st world as they're here in the 3rd world. So to infer that Feminism is not really (only) a 3rd world issue!

If you read what I wrote once again, you will notice that we have the same interpretation.
