6.2 Help nation-states in overcoming their national interest
6.3 Minimizing the role of veto power in the word affairs.
7. Concussion

After the horrific experiences of WWI and WWII, the world leaders pledged to settle their difference with peace and reconciliation. conflicts and wars remained an inalienable part due to the anarchic nature of the global system. so, the desire to form a platform where member-states could resolve their differences before they descended into wars was the result of the formation of the united nations. The UNs promised to save the future generations from the scourge of wars. the acquisition of weapons of mass destructions (WMDs) made the role of the UN more prominent in the world. Although the Un did best in overcoming the anarchic nature of the world, the role of veto and superpowers substantially decreased its effectiveness. with the passage of time, total wars decreased in number but conflicts and proxy wars rose in numbers. the UN is putting its efforts to unite the world, but, peace seems elusive due to the weakness in its structure.
The role of the UN is multidimensional in nature. as it supports hunger programs, gender-equality programs, climate change programs, and other programs in order to ensure the safety of the world. Although these efforts led by the UN is important for the world, the Un has, so far, failed in bringing consensus among the nation-states in general and the security council in particular. of all the different programs, one factor that evidently manifested the weakness of the UN is decreasing the level of military engagements around the world.
One of the reasons of failure in minimising military engagements around the world by the UNs, is, in fact, its failure in creating consensus among the superpowers. with divided security council, the UN is simply a forum where member-states can extinguish their frustration of inequalities than proving the effectiveness of the UN. More and More military engagement by the UN has proved that the world is moving away from peace.
The equally important reason for the Un military engagement is its failure to influence the superpowers of the world. as, the US, for example, considers the UN an organisation to cooperate with the world if it does not act anything against US interests. otherwise, with the power of veto, the Us can cancel the UN role easily. As the desire to influence the affairs of the world by the superpowers- China, The US, Russia, and The EU- to show their dominance and hegemony over others, the role of UN in overcoming the conflicting nature between powerful countries seems less relevant and effective in nature.
Also, the UN represents the 193 member-states but not the seven billion people around the world. so, it cannot act as a world government to run the affairs of the world. its role is more likely a forum to discuss international affairs than enforcing international norms on the member-states. in such a scenario, conflicts between the member-states cannot be simply overcome by considering the current status and role of the Un. Military engagements can be overcome if Un acted more like a government than simply a forum.
In today's world, the UN is involved in many conflicts by helping to form a consensus between the warring parties. The Syrian crisis is a real test for the UN, As, almost all major powers are locked in this conflict. Russia and Iran are propping in keeping Bashar al Asad in power. The US, Israel, and the Gulf countries are doing their best in removing Assad from power. The UN role is limited in such a scenario. though the UN failed to bring the countries on the negotiating table, it is helping in humanitarian aids to the poor and miserable people of Syria.
One of the oldest issues that started with the birth of the UN, but, still unresolved, is the Israel-Palestine conflict. the Un acted traditionally. it sent peace-keeping troops to maintain peace temporarily. it urged the members to settle differences peacefully. but it failed effectively in forming a permanent solution. As Israel repeatedly resorted towards violence and brutally suppressed the unarmed Palestinian youth, the UN preferred silence than making the world realised the importance of the issue in maintaining peace in the world.
Kashmir issue is another example of the UN engagement and its failure in finding a lasting solution. It started after the partition of India and Pakistan. both countries claimed the territory as their integral part and their right to rule since independence. the indigenous people of Kashmir rejected the claims made by the Indian authority and wanted to join with Pakistan. resultantly, war broke out in 1948 and, since then, the UN maintained a small number of troops to observe peace across the Line Of Control (LOC).
the deteriorating condition and escalation of proxy wars in Yemen is a test of the role of the UN than simply sending the UN Observers in the conflict zone. Un has repeatedly highlighted the worst humanitarian conditions in Yemen in front of the world, but it is the world that has placed importance on the national interest than for the welfare and prosperity of the whole world. UN peace observers in Yemen, like other conflict zones, is proved ineffective based on the current conditions and scenario of the war.
Since 2001, Afghanistan has become more of a problem to world affairs than a solution. the war on terror has brought significant death toll with rising insecurity, inflation, suicide-booming and unemployment for the region. the UN members are active in Afghanistan to seek peace with no major outcome. As Taliban are reluctant to negotiate unless the US withdraws troops from Afghanistan to ensure democracy to flourish but peace seems elusive.
One clear example of the world moving away from peace is the rising numbers of proxy wars around the world. Proxy wars are constantly rising with the diminishing role of the UN. The UN is post-active rather than pre-active. it waits for conflicts to happen and then sends military engagement to settle issues between warring parties. The UN, instead, of military engagement, draw a complete outline to ensure peace. Proxy wars are active in almost every corner of the world. there are potential conflicts which might activate proxy wars- like South China Sea dispute- in different regions, so, the UN should settle the issue before states decide to settle them at their own military capabilities.
Military engagement by the Un is also rising due to the increasing gulf between the powerful nations of the world. As, the US, Russia, China, India, and the EU and other countries hold divergent views and expect the world to act on their terms of engagement, little the Un can do in ensuring peace to minimise the level of military engagements by the US.
Additionally, nationalism is rising, while, globalisation is in retreat making the UN much difficult to bring the world on the point of convergence. nationalism, ethnocentrism and xenocentrism are rising in the western world. the western world which supported globalisation vigorously around the world is, in fact, retreating from it. resultantly, peace, for which the UN created, seems almost a difficult task for the UN if not entirely impossible.
More and more military engagement show the failure of the UN in preserving peace in the world. it is the responsibility of the UN to act without any discrimination and without the influence of the superpowers. at the same time, it can urge the world to engage the prospects of peace. by engaging more with one another, differences between the member-states can be overcome. The UN can ask its members state to avoid protectionist policies in trade and commerce and immigration policies by helping the world to merge in order to remove differences and to create the sense of unity. Through this way, the UN can decrease the level of military engagements by ensuring peace and prosperity in the world at the same time.
The UN can help the member-states in overcoming their national interest and to work for the prosperity of the whole world. more than fifty per cent of the world resides in poverty, injustice, diseases, and crimes in infested areas. Moreover, the threat to the world like climate change, water crisis, population explosion, and other preventable crisis cannot be overcome if the member states prefer nation interest by neglecting the importance of the crisis and the role of the UN in help stabilising the world.
Also, to make the UN more democratic it is the responsibility of the UN to decrease the role of veto power in the world. if the remaining countries form consensus then, certainly, the security council cannot effectively act in a one-sided way. so, to ensure peace and less military engagements, the UN has to devise ways to promote unity by minimizing the role of the veto power in the world affairs.
It is an unfortunate fact that every corner of the world is suffering from some kind of violence and wars. the dream of making a peaceful world can only be realised if the world leaders allow the UN to work effectively. The UN military engagements are temporarily bringing peace but the long-term solutions are yet to be realised. the world leaders must act coherently to address the issues by putting humanitarian values first and national interest later. to provide a world of peace and progress for the future generations, the UN must act by minimising the differences of the member states and making proxy wars, conflicts, and other military engagements between member-states more difficult. only then, the human potentials can be utilised for the growth and prosperity of the world.

I wrote it without much knowledge and research about the topic. it was written just to see how to write with limited research on a topic. I did my best to stay in the topic and to show information which might not be much directed to the requirements but ( might be)acceptable. please share your views.

Overall good attempt. Atleast you tried.

The essay is about military engagements by UN, not the role of UN in military conflicts.

Try to develop arguments from different angles.

Give solid arguments with examples. How P5 will allow a change in SC. One veto exercise more power than other 192 votes.

In essay section, a link was shared yesterday. Go through that document.

You have almost cracked half topic and just need arguments and more analysis and angles.

Correct interpretation of topic and solid arguments supported by facts are pre-requisites. Other things such as "beautiful English", excellent expression, quotations, etc. are secondary.
