Default Democracy and Illiteracy Do Not Move Together

Outline

1. Introduction

Thesis: Democracy and illiteracy do not move together because uneducated people cannot develop democratic culture in their conscience which disrupts democratic process.

2. Why is illiteracy anti-thesis to democratic culture?

i. Persistent want of Political will
ii. Inadequate budgetary allocations
iii. Regressive cultural norms
iv. The ghost of Gender inequality
v. Persistently prevailing poverty

3. How does illiteracy disrupt democracy?

i. lliterate population cannot choose visionary and capable leaders
ii. Illiterate populace cannot hold leaders accountable for their failure to perform
iii. Illiteracy entrenches feudal norms and suppresses liberties
iv. Illiterate population provides a fertile ground for dictatorship
v. Illiteracy blurs awareness of fundamental rights leading to poor governance
vi. Illiterate population cannot make rulers adopt people friendly policies
vii. Illiterate masses do not demand transparency in Govt affairs
viii. Illiteracy maintains gender gap, resulting in inequality and inequity

4. Recommendations for proliferation of literacy leading to stronger democracy
i. Enhancement of GDP spending on Education
ii. Devising of scrupulously designed and thoroughly implemented educational policies
iii. Prioritization of Education as the most pressing challenge
iv. Encouragement of women participation and removal of peculiar barriers to girl’s education
