In Essay paper, can headings/numbering/points be fruitful for us r not?

All forum members specially Seniors are requested to throw light on my query.

In my opinion headings, numberings, or points are good as long as these do not break the conceptual chain. If these headings do not affect the coherence of the essay these are tolerable. Headings depend on the nature of topic. There are some topics which demand numbering/points by default. Like I am writing on Global Financial Crisis, this topic is so vast that it would be nearly impossible to inject all the concepts, steps, trigger points with detail in a period of three hours. In that case it is better to explain major points in paragraph style and jot down the remaining points in numbers or so in order to cover maximum trigger points and balance the essay. This is my strategy but I do not know whether it is desirable or not.

I am in a fix while writing on Global Financial Crisis, my initial draft has gone to 120 pages, and target is to bring it down to 30 pages. What I have to do is to take knives and axe to cut it down or to make its précis by jotting down maximum points and explain few concepts. This is the scenario which compels me to get help of headings, numbering etc. This has become a thesis rather than essay.


I do not know the rules of essay do not rely on my policy if it irritates you. I follow natural solution which comes in my mind. Problem is that I am greedy while writing on any topic if time allows me I can go for five hours paper.
