Default What is an analytical essay?

Analytical Essays
An analytical or analysis essay is one that analyzes, that is, interprets or examines something. There are several different kinds of analytical essay including cause and effect, description, literary analysis, and process analysis.
Cause and Effect
A cause and effect essay examines or interprets the causes or effects of a situation. In this kind of essay, you may start from a known result or situation and examine what brought about that result. For example, it is known and observable that the sky appears blue, so you could write about why that sky appears blue, what causes it. Or, a cause and effect essay might begin from a known situation and then examine the effects of that situation. For example, intensive agriculture uses enormous amounts of fertilizer, so you could write about the effects of fertilizer that runs off farmland when it rains.
Description
Some essays do nothing but describe. To describe something in an essay, it's a good idea to use some of the same techniques as you would use in creative writing. Make use of all five senses: how does a thing look, feel, taste, smell, and sound? Note those small, unique details that really enable a reader to see what it is about the thing you are describing that makes it different from other things like it. Descriptive essays can easily slip over the dividing line between something you have to write for school and a true piece of creative non-fiction.
Don't forget, though, that clarity and accuracy are important, so stay away from abstraction as much as possible. And remember that the techniques of the descriptive essay are useful in other essay types, as well. How can you analyze something without a quick description of it, at least?
Literary Analysis
A literary analysis essay interprets literature (a poem, short story, play, etc). It may discuss the meaning of the work, or it may evaluate the use of particular literary techniques, style and so on. Generally, a literary analysis focuses on three aspects of literature: a writer, a specific literary work or works, or a literary element. These three can be combined in various ways; for example, you could choose to write about Shakespeare's use of the rhyming couplet in his comedies, you could write about Shakespeare as a typical (or atypical) playwright of his time, or you could examine the theme of Macbeth.
Process Analysis
A process analysis essay looks at how something is done. You could approach your topic as a how-to, and guide your readers through the process that they will follow. For example, you could write an essay describing how to hand-polish a car in a step-by-step format that allows readers to polish their own car following your instructions. Or you could look at the topic as something that has already been done. For example, you could write about the grandfather clock in your front hallway, describing the process by which it was made. Thus the process analysis paper can either instruct (teach someone how-to) or inform (illuminate a past event).

Default Essay Paper

Essay writing is the first and most important paper in CSS examination. There is a general perception that one should prepare all other 11 subjects but no need of any thorough preparation for essay writing. I totally disagree with all those who think that either one cannot or one should not prepare for this particular paper. Essay writing needs at least as much preparation and attention as any other subject, if not more than other subjects.

I have met many individuals who have even attempted CSS but they don’t know what essay really is. This is the main reason that every year around 60 to 70 % candidates fail to get 40 marks in essay paper. When such candidates come out of examination hall they show off by telling their friends that they wrote 23 pages and when after a few months they get their marks sheets they are shocked to see that they just have 23 marks in essay. Marks like 10, 20 and 25 are quite common in essay writing. For your surprise sometime candidates get zero. This happens when one has totally misunderstood and misjudged meaning of proposition.

Now the question arises how to proceed and prepare? The answer is one should develop a crystal-clear view about essay and essay writing. In an earlier post I have recommended en.wikipedia.org , I would suggest all those who are preparing for CSS that they must visit

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/essay

Some of you might have seen past papers of essay and might have thought that it is an easy paper as one has maximum choices as compare to any other paper. It is a fact that one may have 10 propositions to choose from but I think most of you had not paid heed to a note written in all of past papers, it is

“Write a comprehensive and analytical essay on one of the following topics:”

As far as the word comprehensive is concerned it is quite clear that one has to write several pages but what is the real meaning of word analytical in essay writing. For your information there are several types of essays and analytical essay is a specific type. If you will write an excellent essay but it is not analytical then it is quite likely that you will get less than 40. I will suggest that you should research web and find out what are analytical essays. You can view my post for having an idea of analytical essays.

http://www.cssforum.com.pk/showthrea...=2648#post2648

Essay writing is a pure art and like any other art it really needs thorough and extensive practice and preparation. I personally know people who are expert and professional essay writers and they are earning thousands of dollars by selling their essays on the web.

From my point of view your command on English language is the most significant ingredient for qualifying CSS. If on the basis of several years of education and studies you have developed a sublime expression in written English then you have got a fair chance to qualify CSS. Those who are weak in English or have pathetic written expression it is simply not possible to qualify. They should better improve their English and then think of appearing in CSS.

As I have worked as a Concept & Creative Writer in an Internet Marketing Company so I have got a fair idea of what essay writing is. Some seniors have given tips on essay writing but I don’t think anyone has raised such points. I will be sharing some other insights about essay writing and other papers in future so do continue with me and let me know your opinions about my views.

Mr. Diplomat you have suggested some very useful points. But these points are worth nothing when the list of essays are such that a candidate can not make up his mind from where, what and how he is going to start it, although he has a very good study background but he fails to get to the theme. What remedies you suggest in this Scenario. For example, He receives

Existantialism
Humanism
Puritism
etc.

Mr.Diplomat i really appreciate this thread of urs as far as understanding essay-writing is concerned.Kp such work going for all of us.

Mr desrt fox,i dont understand where u find Mr.Diplomat's tips lacking..For example we all know tht there are around 8/10 topics given in css essay ppr,n topics are like a bouquet of diffrent subjects ranging from general one to simple economics to pure philosophy n literature. There are usually two topics as general as well, which are most attempted for being quite general in nature and good studies in the background leave no doubt in attempting such an essay beautiffully.

Maa salam

Hi there,

I am just a new user of this site and havn't got enough experience of css mania ...

I would just like to share my view point regarding essay writing. I believe that there are 10 topics and you have to choose one ... selection is important, i think one should do give at least 20 minutes to choose a topic.

You might have little knowledge about all the topics given, but most the problems arrive when you are in the middle of an essay and short of ideas.

I believe that you should attempt that topic which your heart is going for, not your brain. becuase your brain works on facts and your heart works on emotions ... and i believe that you can be short of facts but not emotions ...

although this is my very own personal opinion ... people may reject it ... i don't mind .. please share your own opinion about how to attemp an essay.

regards,

Nice to read from you.

I also think so but hat to do with examiner if he disagree to our essay. Actually in css we have to follow the order of time and have to keep in view that what examiner want us to write down. Well we ought to be innovative in exploring our views but contending the examiner is also an issue to be pondered over.

Regards,
