Depends upon time.
If you have time on hands, you should prepare as much as you can. If the situation is otherwise, then the only choice you have is to prepare a few hot topics and expect something related to those topics in the examination. |

You must attain a good writing speed, otherwise the chances are that you will be thrashed out of the competition. Still over 5 months time is on hands. Lets say you spend first month learning how to write an essay. 15 essays per month will produce 60 essays. This is enough. Don't lose hope and get started. |

Read, read and write is the simple formula to improve writing skill. Read 50 pages daily and write the obtained info in your own words. Initially, write 300 words or less than and gradually pace up with the time. It will take time and effort-effort of using vocab and different styles to present the data.
More, memorize vocab and use them in your write ups. For example. U read about Pakistan's biggest problem which is consist of 40 pages. Read the pages twice and thrice times. After the reading, write it in your own words with different simple and different vocab. This way, u will improve and i do too.

I second Aariz
Samuel Johnson, a great English scholar, once said he did not
want to read anything by people who had written more than they had read. You can't write well unless you read enough. Writing and reading go hand in hand. Once you have done a bit of both of these activities simultaneously, you will begin to realize that both complement each other. After that you will be able to do autopsy of a writing and comprehend the deeper levels of any piece of writing. Here's an exercise that will certainly help you: After having read a column, reread it with a pencil/pen in hand. Underline the important points in the column and annotate on the side. Just keep in mind that the point of underlining is to separate out what's important from what's not. In annotations, just write a small line, a kind of summary, of what the author said besides each point you think is important. Here's an example: (It doesn't have to be on computer. You can do it ON your daily newpaper/magazine as well.) After that, write an outline of this whole column. Exactly like you would do in an essay. It must have all the points/sections that author had written. In the end, make a precis. So here's the summary: 1) Read 2) Reread, underline and annotate 3) Outline 4) Write a precis This is a multifaceted exercise that will help you in both essay and grammar/composition paper. It will enhance your comprehension. It is a practice of outlining and it is one of the best practices for precis. Even if you do one column a day it will pay dividends. |

i am greatful to @chemguy @aariz @faheem aurakzai @umer @tassawur for taking out such a precious time and sharing such a wonderful tips but please do correct me if i am wrong,i found a bit of contradiction regarding the replies of aariz bhai and chemguy.actually chemguy what you are referring to write a summary of an important topic i.e precis and aariz bhai is of the view to begin with 300 words and then move further.my view is that note down important facts and figures from dawn in separate register and to pick up one article from dawn and then to write on that topic in my own words but the problem i am facing is the own words sometimes the vocabulary use is so much advance and philosophical in dawn that one is unable to clear the thoughts and where to begin to where to end it...please do help..

When you are reading articles for vocabulary, concentrate on gathering vocabulary.
When you read the article to get an idea about what the author is trying to say, stick to the task. Concentrate at one task at a time. When you read enough, a stage comes where although you do not know the precise and exact meaning of the high frequency vocabulary used but the words imitate their meaning by themselves. You can get a rough idea of what is written in article and this is the thing you need. Nobody can learn each and every word while reading the article. Nobody have this much time to check each and every word of an article in the dictionary. Nobdy have this much tendency to remember every single word mentioned in the articles. This is what everyone of us gets through and get used to with. Develop the habit of reading and you will observe the changes yourself. Time is the key to everything. |
