How to Make and Use an Essay Outline

An essay outline is probably the most important friend you will have while writing your essay. It is the scaffolding of your paper and the skeleton of your ideas. It is the framework by which you will write a killer essay. And frankly, it is difficult to write one without an outline.
When you begin writing an essay outline, use the following model as a guide:

I. INTRODUCTION:
Thesis:_____________________________________________________.
II. BODY PARAGRAPH 1:
Opening Sentence:___________________________________________.
Detail 1:____________________________________________________.
Detail 2:____________________________________________________.
Detail 3:____________________________________________________.
III. BODY PARAGRAPH II:
Transition/Opening Sentence:_________________________________.
Detail 1:____________________________________________________.
Detail 2:____________________________________________________.
Detail 3:____________________________________________________.
IV. BODY PARAGRAPH III:
Transition/Opening Sentence:_________________________________.
Detail 1:____________________________________________________.
Detail 2:____________________________________________________.
Detail 3:____________________________________________________.
V. BODY PARAGRAPH IV:
Transition/Opening Sentence:_________________________________.
Detail 1:____________________________________________________.
Detail 2:____________________________________________________.
Detail 3:____________________________________________________.
VI. CONCLUSION:
Reconfirmed Thesis:_________________________________________.

If you use this rough guide and fill in the blanks as you are researching your essay, you will find writing the essay so simple. You have all you need in front of you. It is researched and organized. All you have to do now is fill in the blanks with transition words and smooth language.

The Essay Outline
Once you have taken your research notes, recorded bibliographic information, and composed your central idea, the next step is to create an outline of your essay. The outline is your essay's blueprint, in which you arrange the parts of your discussion into a logical order.
You should make a preliminary topic outline at an early stage of your research; the outline can serve as a guide for the research itself. As your work continues, you will likely have to revise your outline. In some cases, your course instructor may require you to submit your preliminary outline and bibliography, along with the central idea, before you begin writing the essay.
Take care that your outline covers the whole topic promised in your essay title -- but no more. A common student error is to consume space at the beginning of the essay with irrelevant biographical or anecdotal material.

Outline Format

Write your outline in point form, using numbering styles and levels of indentation to make clear the logical order and hierarchy of your ideas, as follows:
Title:

General Idea:

Used for major headings
. . .

Used for "first level" subheadings
. . .

Used for "second level" sub-subheadings
. . .

Used, if necessary, for "third-level" headings. Use the multi-level paragraph numbering tool in your word processor, which will wrap text around with proper hanging indents.
. . .

Headings and subheadings stand for logical divisions, and a division has at least two parts. Therefore, you should not have any single headings at a given level.

Have you ever told a joke and just before coming to the punch line, remembered the part in the middle that makes the punch line funny? Using an essay outline helps you organize your thoughts so that you don’t make that mistake. In addition, you’ll find the more structured your outline is, the better organized and easier to write your essay will be. A well-structured essay outline helps you travel from point to point in your composition, creating a natural flow for the reader until you bring the “punch line” home in the summary or conclusion.

Title (Centered or left-aligned)

I. Introduction
A. Premise/Thesis
B. Statement of points
II. Body
A. Point 1
1. Supporting Information
2. Supporting Information
B. Point 2
Supporting Information
Supporting Information
C. Point 3
Supporting Information
Supporting Information
III. Conclusion/Summary
A. Summary of supporting information
B. Conclusion reached
(Restatement of premise)
IV. Citations

Begin your outline by deciding whether to use the more traditional I, II, III, and IV outline markers, use headings w/o any markers or a combination of both. The title should be at the top of your paper and everything else will fall below it.
I. The Introduction — why you chose this topic or your premise /thesis and/or the conclusion you hope to prove in the body (A). Enter the points you will cover (B).
II. The Body — Use the points as subheadings. (A, B, C, etc.) Under each point, list the information that supports or elaborates on each point (1, 2). This information will make up your essay body.
III. The Conclusion — The summary of your supporting information (A) should show how you reached your (B) conclusion.
IV. Citations — List your citations. (If you used outside sources of information)
In addition to helping you organize your thoughts, an essay outline also helps you plan the length of your paper. In fact, a good outline can make writing an essay as simple as filling in the blanks.
An essay outline can even help you determine the length of each paragraph. Especially in cases where you are limited to a number of pages or assigned a word count, you can use an essay outline to break the structure into percentages or words.
Writing an essay outline can be as easy as you want to make it. Using an essay outline helps you organize your thoughts from beginning to end and makes sure you don’t leave any important parts out of the middle!
