I think 42 / 100 is quit low score[/QUOTE]
its not low score man, i would be more than happy just to pass in this nightmare paper of essay. anyone who pass this paper means he or she did a very good job. and also compulsory subjects are not those in which you need to get high scores to improve your merit except for the e.d.s and islamiat. for that purpose concentrate on your optionals.

Yes dear you are quite right. Essay is one of the most toughest paper in the CSS exam. Only passing marks are enough in this paper. Because the whole exam depends on this paper so it is the corner stone of the exam.

In 2012 I had scored 46 marks.

It is ok but keep in mind we are writing essays since class 5th and even a simple Graduate person who is going to appear in CSS exam, has about 10 years experience of essay writing.
After that there is no reason to secure only passing marks in this paper. 60 marks should be the target.

I agree to you that a candidate should write an essay with the aim of getting more than 60 marks

One can go to 70 marks in the essay paper. Marks on it depend on ur language, grammar and arguments.

however, to achieve good marks in essay be original with no silly grammatical mistakes + repetition of words.

one of my teachers likened essay-writing with guiding a small kid through a garden. your examiner is a small kid, so you have to avoid making him bored, just be simple, elaborate your 'kid' the flowers in the garden, don't use 'biological' names of the flowers, this will certainly make him bore... believe me, your examiner is just watching out for blunders in your essay just to fail you.

again i would advise you to be simple and original (in an ingenious way). try to make your intro and conclusion more beautiful. if you are kind of a tricksy person, then you can do better
what is the hightes score in essays ever?
