Essay writing. A natural talent or something that can be learnt ?

Dear Members

I am a css aspirant and have a very strong academic background, however one of the weaknesses of mine is writing. I want to know if essay writing is a natural talent or something which can be learnt ? I have full 14 months to prepare for css 2015 and I am dedicated and committed to pass it.
However seeing the essay written by CSP's is no way near where I can even think of writing such great essays.

I am worried about essay in CSS but at the same time confident about other subjects. I believe I can pass other exams but worried about essay.

I would love to hear from someone who was in my position when he decided to do css and thought essay would be very difficult for him/her pass but then they were indeed able to pass.

I will also appreciate if someone can put light on the first step for preparing for essay as last time I wrote an essay was in school.

I believe in hard work and a man gets what he strives for. But valuable guidance from seniors act as a motivation in achieving your goals.

Is anyone here who was very weak in essay able to pass the Essay exam ? What was your strategy and initial steps for essay preparation?

Thanks for your anticipated help.

You and me are on the same boat, I am also immature in essay writing.
I asked the same question after going through some of the essays here.
Well, you can learn essay writing but this needs some hard work and dedication.
Start reading newspaper, Editorial and opinion page would be suffice for the initial stages. When you come across any new word jot it down, and then search for the meanings. Use those words in your writing and in some days ( 4 to 5 ), you will feel the difference.
This won't only burgeon your vocabulary but will also help you to learn those beautiful expressions which are frequently used in newspapers.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have started reading dawn news, specially the editorial section. Finding it quite difficult at the moment but hope as time passes by it will become easier and a routine thing.

When I see the topics of CSS essays, each and every topic needs huge amount of knowledge. I have no idea how people who pass it collect so much data. I believe the data and knowledge automatically gathers in your brain throughout the preparation phase for css by reading regular Current Affairs, News, Pak Affairs books etc. Correct me if I am wrong.

You are absolutely correct, reading newspaper not only increases your vocabulary but knowledge too. Newspapers are full of knowledge about current affairs, which are undoubtedly used in essay writing.

Writting Effective Essay: Indeed A Tough Nut To Crack!

Well, you just converted my thoughts into words bro, I am going through the same phase and I am gonna appear in CE-2015. For the past couple of months of my search through this forum and reading through all the posts and discussions of seniors related to essay and fetching good marks in this subject, I noticed one strong common factor that all the aspirants possessed who scored above 50 in essay and that is good command over grammar and composition because no matter how much of a strong background you've in English and no matter how much information and material you organize and collect from different sources for essay preparation, it all become meaningless if you can't express it grammatical correct during paper. Therefore your foremost emphasis and priority must be on grammar and punctuation and you should write something that is grammatically perfect, even if the material is average and ordinary but there are no grammatical mistakes, the examiner can't hold back from giving you good marks. Thats why you see so many brilliant aspirants getting failed in this subject especially this year because they put all their concentration and focus on collecting material during their essay preparation but dont give much time to grammar which is the backbone of your english expression and each mistake you make, you lose 1 number and 50 odd mistakes cost you essay paper.

Dear!
Essay writing is an art and you can develop it by practice and reading good books etc. But let me tell you one thing that whenever you write an essay get that checked with an experienced English language expert otherwise your efforts would bear no fruits.
Good luck!

Thanks for the valuable suggestion. I am thinking of a way to practice my writing. How about reading an article in dawn and after reading it thoroughly I write the same in my own words ? Do you think its a good starting point ?

Essay writing is not a difficult task unless you understand the real purpose of essay. In CSS, paper checker wants to assess how you elucidate your view point about a particular statement. Try to be as simple as possible in your language, avoid grammatical mistakes, usage of punctuation marks should be accurate.
For those who want to start from scratch. Dedicate an hour daily for paragraph writing on a particular topic and then get it checked by a good English teacher or a person who has passed CSS Essay before. By consistent practice you can tame the monster of essay.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely give one hour everyday on writing. However even if my vocabulary and grammar at this stage is not up to css standard, should I still start writing essay or improve my vocabulary and grammar first and then start writing?
