Statistics does matter somewhat but analytical approach proves you the best price. So, first try to analyse things as much as you can. While, you should add two/three statistics at least. But this should not be your first priority as you can do good without it.

As pointed out by Mubashar, analytical strategy matters the most. Additionally, do keep in mind that a good essay should back the arguments with tactics like causation, factual statements, analogies etc. If you have the right arguments, then any mention of correct statistics will surely distinguish you from the pool of writers. But stats can only prove useful in exposition. Analysis requires more indepth disscussion on stats. Hence, try to use them with caution. Moreover, writing stats will also augment your impression in the eyes of the examiner. Hence, it is vital that you mention that suitable stats. However, do remember that you should not throw stats in a haphazard manner. Stats should be relevant and pertinent to the issue/topic/argument at hand.

Make it clear that Arguments/Analysis pay you much more than the statistics. Always have an argumentative or analytic approach. This should be the primary and the statistics should be secondary (provide the figures where it suits most and appropriate). Keep it in mind that this is the best approach for most of the subjects. But, there are certain subjects that need the opposite approach; even tackling some questions that demand stats, statistics must be provided.
So, don't waver your thoughts and write as much simple and with concrete analysis as you can.
