Thesis Statement
Thesis statement explicitly states your stance on the given topic, in rest of the essay you corroborate that stance with your arguments. At this point I would like to make one thing very clear, Thesis statement is only required in Argumentative Essays and nowhere else. It becomes logical to have thesis statement in argumentative essays only because only these type of essays require your clear stance, either against the topic or in favor of it. Following are some of the argumentative essays where thesis statement is required:
1) Gender Equality is a Myth: Thesis Statement: Gender Equality is a reality (Countering the Topic) Thesis Statement: Both genders are not equal thus gender equality is a myth (In favor of topic) Its position in Outline: Introduction a) Gender Equality: Meaning b) Thesis Statement 2) Labor saving devices are more troublesome than they worth 3) Anticipation is often greater than realization ================================================== == Now, any essay other than argumentative one does not require thesis statement. I explain why. Consider the topic "Energy crisis: Causes & Consequences." This is simple descriptive essay and it does not ask you to take sides rather you are just required to write on the given topic as it is. You can't take sides so you don't need a thesis statement. Simple!!! Following are some examples of descriptive essays: 1) I disapprove what you say, but I defend to death your right to say 2) The roll of women in development of society I hope it is clear now. P.S: Someone had asked me to visit and contribute to this forum so I do it now. I hope you would be glad AR |

I would prefer an essay with some background information and than I would like to put light on the importance of topic w.r.t. reader’s point of view. And at the end of paragraph, I would love to place the “thesis statement” .Let you people assume that I am a reader. Than the foremost question in my mind would be why I should read the essay. Is it meant to provide me benefit ,or is it important enough to be read?
Or let I assume that essay is important than what is the stance of a writer in a subject matter?Or how convincing you are to argue with. By ending a paragraph at the thesis will give me following advantages. 1.Second paragraph links with introduction automatically. 2.Reader has certain prediction of what I’m going to write with my arguments. 3.Reader knows that without looking the whole passages his self interest of “what is the ultimate benefit in the passage is for “them”,and theywon’t be satisfied without reading the full passage or in other words “I have grasped the attention of my readers.” For example topic “freedom is not but slavery” I would start my introduction as The idea of freedom is as dangerous as the idea of slaver y itself.(There arises a question in readers mind ;as why freedom is dangerous than that of slavery) If absolute freedom is compulsive than why laws are made and man is compelled to follow tests and tribulations w.r.t. time. (It’s my explanation as well as clarifying my point that why I have taken this controversial stance on the basis of my observations.) Reality is that if there is absolute freedom than this earth is no more other than living hell. (setting the mind of my reader to have an ultimate stance or thesis of my essay) Without the submission of will ,peace ,prosperity and tranquility is an eternal fallacy.(My thesis more than the idea of idea of absolute freedom .Here I have taken inversion of the topic i.e. I reversed the case that a big hurdle in peace is not slavery but absolute freedom) Just read the full passage: I would start my introduction as The idea of freedom is as dangerous as the idea of slaver y itself. If absolute freedom is compulsive than why laws are made ,why certain rules are orchestrated ,and why man is compelled to follow tests and tribulations w.r.t. time in order to achieve respect and dignity in a competitive world.Reality is that if there is absolute freedom than this earth is no more than the living hell. Without the submission of will ,peace ,prosperity and tranquility is an eternal fallacy. |

Tips for Writing Your Thesis Statement
1. Determine what kind of paper you are writing: An analytical paper breaks down an issue or an idea into its component parts, evaluates the issue or idea, and presents this breakdown and evaluation to the audience. An expository (explanatory) paper explains something to the audience. An argumentative paper makes a claim about a topic and justifies this claim with specific evidence. The claim could be an opinion, a policy proposal, an evaluation, a cause-and-effect statement, or an interpretation. The goal of the argumentative paper is to convince the audience that the claim is true based on the evidence provided. If you are writing a text that does not fall under these three categories (e.g., a narrative), a thesis statement somewhere in the first paragraph could still be helpful to your reader. 2. Your thesis statement should be specific—it should cover only what you will discuss in your paper and should be supported with specific evidence. 3. The thesis statement usually appears at the end of the first paragraph of a paper. 4. Your topic may change as you write, so you may need to revise your thesis statement to reflect exactly what you have discussed in the paper. Thesis Statement Examples Example of an analytical thesis statement: An analysis of the college admission process reveals one challenge facing counselors: accepting students with high test scores or students with strong extracurricular backgrounds. The paper that follows should: Explain the analysis of the college admission process Explain the challenge facing admissions counselors Example of an expository (explanatory) thesis statement: The life of the typical college student is characterized by time spent studying, attending class, and socializing with peers. The paper that follows should: Explain how students spend their time studying, attending class, and socializing with peers Example of an argumentative thesis statement: High school graduates should be required to take a year off to pursue community service projects before entering college in order to increase their maturity and global awareness. The paper that follows should: Present an argument and give evidence to support the claim that students should pursue community projects before entering college Source [Without a thesis statement, essay is no more an essay]

If its your own creation, then, my dear brother a humble advice for you, there are a lot of other ways also to become smart; your suggested irrelevant view can excruciatingly ruin whole struggle of an aspirant. However, if you have any authentic source, kindly provide us as we could augment our knowledge. @Mods If the author fails to produce any authentic source, I find no any reason for not to delete his futile post.

P.S: Go get some fresh air and don't try to become smart by copy pasting the stuff from other sites. I talk what is practical and required in CSS exam. Instead of making another useless post by copy pasting, pass the exam with your own technique then tell the people.

A learned human demands evidence, beast not.
Bilal, your ustads are not good. You’re wrongly taught about the charm of a thesis statement that:
“It is only required in Argumentative Essays and nowhere else.” I provided evidence from a renowned resource for justification of my point; however, you didn’t. If my previous evidence was penetratingly rigid for you to utterly devour, kindly consult some more justifications of my post in following resources and have mercy on new aspirants: 1) http://classroom.synonym.com/differe...ents-2593.html 2) https://blog.udemy.com/types-of-essays/ 3) http://www.ieltsbuddy.com/thesis-statement.html 4) Re-read a post above you. Ursula also read the same. These are only a few more resources to keep you calm for a while now. However, you’ll find ample justifications of my point in Essay books as well. [Sachay ho to daleel do. Mera Rab mana karta h hamein k kisi ko blindly follow nhi karo CSP ho ya PM] “Do not follow anyone blindly” Al-Quran (2:170)

thesis statement shows your stance at the matter.once you stick to a point, you have to pursue in that same periphery.I don't think that one should start with hackneyed and trite Proverbs or adage.try to simplify things with simple, clear, precise, and short statement.

Secondly,Bilal brother(indeed a topper),we are requesting you to provide evidence. And kindly explain me how you will link war on terror and human right abuses.Since both are different in perspective and too broadened one.Even I've difficulty as from where to start my essay and what would be the final draft of my essay.plus,at every point there is quite possibility of my deviation from topic statement as well.Hope, you won't mind to explain us with conducive arguments. Please try to act like a helper not as jst to tell us that you're Superior. We all are here to learn from our mistakes and I would feel proud if you My opinion is that even a narrative essay could be turned into an argumentative essays; Furthermore, y |
