In my opinion, rote learning and ratta should assist you in your essay a lot. The ability to write an essay that imposes some serious argumentative comments on the topic lies in the competence of the writer to reproduce certain type of information (statistical, argumentative, descriptive etc). No matter how expressive you are, your inability to link the topic to valid outside information will not earn a great deal of appreciation from examiner’s side. Hence, for the essay, ratta of certain stats, descriptions, dictions, sayings and other material is a must but it should be replicated in an appropriate and relevant manner.

Your try to reproduce the exact text that you had memorized earlier will not at all place you at an advantage. Certainly, you cannot predict the exact topic of the essay. Essay writing, in addition to practice and memorization requires a flair of creativity. Moreover, remember that every topic is distinctive in its contents and hence you cannot link it to the memorized text. Let me give an example. In the last year's exam, one of my acquaintances prepared the topic 'women in Pakistan'. Instead, the given topic was slightly different and pertained to the features of sports women and national image. He, instead of tackling the topic in an appropriate manner, reproduced all the memorized text and did not discussed the sports women at large. He subsequently failed the essay in a miserable manner.

Hence, it is always wise to memorize certain material for the sake of effective argumentation and not mere reproduction. Moreover, it is difficult to reproduce entire memorized essays than to write in your own style.
