The very soul of Bacon's Essays lies in its being difficult and intricate. You know, a thing clear is clear but when you come to decipher a complicated piece of writing, that is there when one feels its real charm and beauty.
I just want to say that you people try by yourself to understand the very nature and meaning of Bacon's Essays. Regards! |

Well, I tell you the way I study them. I don't study them with the help of any notes. I just start studying them, whatever word, phrase or allusion that I don't get, I immediately look it up in some dictionary (Oxford Advanced is recommended), reference book or encyclopedia (say wikipedia). This way I come to understand Bacon's Essays. Other benefits of such a study are that you learn vocabulary especially right word in the right place; you memorize Bacon's proverbial lines and epigrammatic language which can be used by you for references in many different situations (you know, Bacon's Essays cover a diverse range of subjects in our day to day lives); you get the habit and ability of reading convoluted writings; etc. Hope, you find this helpful and worthwhile. |
