I think by do and donts you mean what to be make the part of essay and what not? If i am right, so then the answer for this question is simple that you should include all relevant materials, topics, informations, facts and figures from all angles suitable with the topic choosen to make up an essay on.
As far guidelins are concerned, keep the following points in mind while attempting essay paper 1.write relevant to the choosen topic 2.Try to produce as much material as you can 3.Grammar is root level for an essay, as an examinar anticipate for plane english and writing power. 4.write down headings in advance like contents of the essay. 5.elaborate all the headlines with relevant materials and recent examples. 6.Try to put relevant examples with full texts and references if possible, because it has outstanding impression on examiner to make clear a scenarion through examples. 7.Practice makes a man perfect. Essays are solved under threat named Essays Notes,Please do visit to this threat. I hope you will find more than enough there. The last question regarding choosing a topic is very simple becuase obeviously you will choose the topic on which you can write more, relevant and concrete.Sometimes you may have grip over two or more topics,so in this case opt for the unique topic. I know senior can make it more clear than what i did,but still i did what i could.I hope you will be clear upto some extent.

Unfortunately, I also flunked the essay paper in 2010 attempt. I chose to write on "Can Men and Women be equal in Pakistan?"
Clearly, we were supposed to write and produce arguments not confined mainly to the Islamic domain, the mistake that I did and realized later on. However the first thing that comes to our mind right after hearing the word "woman", as an instinct, is Islam. To add to this, the material that we usually come across during our routine survey of articles regarding women is mostly in the context of Islam. Thus my suggestion, the controversial topic should always be avoided unless you firmly believe that you will not drag your essay to emphasize only a single aspect while neglecting others. Too much information of a single aspect of a topic always compromises your creativity. All the Best~
