Essay:

The modern time shows the power of media, as it has become a monstrous power giant of the modern world today. The whole world is bearing the witness of the west hegemony in all spheres of world, and so is the case with the media. The strings of international media are in the hands of west, and west is promulgating whatever there agenda is to make there influence credible and reliable. Basically there are two types of media, Electronic Media and Print Media. Both have their own areas of exercise. Before the monopoly of electronic media, print media had the same monopoly which it has lost now. In Electronic Media there are different types like Television, Radio, VCR, Tape Recorder and the Internet. In Print Media there are also different types like Newspaper, digest, Magazine, pamphlet, book and brochure. These are the sources over which media executes. Due to the long range of sources on which media executes, the power of media is growing immensely. And owing to the rising power of media, the world big powers are exploiting the use of media to the maximum extent to gain their personal designs. However, media is rendering great services for the good of world’s masses also.

Media has a great importance and utilization in every context of life. Today, one cannot even imagine the life without media. Media has made us aware of our surroundings. In past it was really difficult to know each and every thing about distant areas, but today we can even know the news about far flung areas. This is the power of media that one can see jet fighters of Afghanistan dropping bombs while sitting in America and Europe. Moreover, the significance of today’s media can be judged by the increasing usage of internet. No thing is bad, but the use of things could be bad. Same as, media itself is not bad, but the use of media could be bad. The rising power of media, if organized properly, can be transformed into a highly useful means of progress. Regardless of the fact that the west is using media treacherously, the importance of media is undeniable.

It is evident, by the power of media, that media influences the individuals and nations. America and Israel, through the power of media, are trying to influence Iran. They have allied many a countries with them to oppose Iranian acts in form of UN and EU. They are leading a mass Media campaign to urge all the countries and nations against Iran’s nuclear program. There are many other examples of Media influence over the Society and Culture, like the Indian Media today is influencing Pakistani Culture and Society very seriously. Even Pakistani children are singing Indian religious songs, like Banday Mataram. This was a trailer of Media’s influence over masses, now we turn the talk toward the individuals. It is observed that Media, in any society, affects the behaviors of individuals and particularly of children. The research, over the issue, has shown that children of those societies are more violent, where the Media shows violent movies or serials. Holywood movies have also a great influence over the individuals and due to that influence, the whole world is becoming westernize. Media also is an opinion maker, through the editorials and analysis-columns of different newspapers; it makes opinion of individuals and masses. So it is vivid that media influences extremely and it is an undeniable fact.

The role which media is playing is not hidden to the sight of anyone. From the international media to the local media, it is seen that the policy makers of media is working on their specific agendas. As we earlier mentioned that west is working to dominate the whole world and the media campaign of west is part of their New World Order. The aim of western countries, particularly America, is to dominate the whole countries and to keep them under their sway, to get their interests out of specific regions; and for that they are experiencing every type of media campaign. The enmity of west against Islam is not new, which is prevailing very rapidly in western countries, and they are trying to debase Islam and Islamic holy personalities through loathsome measures of media. The act of Denmark’s journalist was an episode of this serial. At the other hand, on local Media it is examined that the media organizations are working on some specific docket to fuel their channels. Government is also trying to dictate different channels to spoke in favor of them. Even every sect of politicians has made their personal channels to promote their ideology. Even though, these things do not come in the domain and ethics of media.

The actual role of media is to reflect whatever the truth is. Every side of any issue, dark and white, should be revealed to the masses and to leave it upon them the analysis. Rather than facts maker, the duty of media should be fact revealer. It is not hidden that what international and local media is presenting over media. If somewhere there is a bomb blasted, the figures of dead and injured, which are told to the people, are not true. So, Media should be crystal clear in showing the facts like the example as stated earlier. Furthermore, the violent shows and movies should be restricted over mass media. Media is a power which has many uses. Today, the power of media is being used in education sector also, which is a great use of media. In Pakistan, Virtual University is not only making electronic lectures for students but also facilitating them through different means of media like, usage of internet and broadcasting of lectures over Virtual Channels. So, this trend should be strengthened and promoted. Political Parties also can defend their good and bad deeds over media and the conclusion should be left over masses to judge who is right and who is wrong. Besides, Media also can enhance the economy of any country through trade on media like today the trend of electronic and web base market is gaining magnitude. These all aforementioned things are the form of Media’s Power.

The Media in Pakistan has passed a long thorny way to reach where it is standing now. Today, in Pakistan, Media is so strong. The history of Pakistani media is battered with harsh measures of previous governments except the very earliest government. The previous governments of Zia-ul-Haq, Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Shareef had slapped many bans over the mouth of media. In Masharraf’s era, in initiation, Pervaiz Musharraf had given freedom to the media, but when he felt that media is hostile toward the government’s policies, he slapped a ban over media. But the media of today is become young and strong. It is very difficult to collide with media. What is more, is that media is a real fourth pillar of Pakistan politics today. The role which media is playing in Pakistan today is plausible. The growing power of Pakistani media is also adding credibility to the media of Pakistan. Media can today even point his finger over anyone who has committed a crime. The leading media brands of Dawn-news, Jan-Group, Nawai-Waqt, Express-news and Dunya-Channel are doing great job. The influence and power of media in Pakistan is not restricted only to the Political sphere of country, but its also influencing all other spheres of concern.

The Media has a great impact over the culture and society of Pakistan. Media is playing a crucial role in molding the true Pakistani culture through demonstrating different folk and cultural shows. The Pakistani Drama has reached its zenith of majesty. Pakistani Drama serials are playing a vital role in shaping the culture of Pakistan. Pakistani Society is also getting many good things through the different shows of Pakistani media. Not only it is creating awareness among the masses of Pakistan, but also imparting knowledge through different measures. Sports channels of Pakistani Media are also providing with a good entertainment to the audiences. Besides these things, some vulgar programs and dramas are also being promulgated on media, which are very harmful and making people obscene and absurd. These types of dramas should not be appreciated and must be vanish from the screen.

Media in Pakistan has brought a new era for Pakistani politics. Though, print media is playing its part since the inception of Pakistan, but the role which Electronic media is playing now days is no doubt appreciable. The freedom which media has gained in the Gen. Musharraf era has made media more intrepid. Media is not only presenting the true Pakistani politics’ picture, but also recommending and suggesting, the government, the way of virtue. It is also encouraging that media is bringing MPAs and MNAs to talk shows and asking them one to one questions. The role which media has played in making the masses aware of the importance of free judiciary and suspension of NRO is considerable. Due to the pressure of Media, Politicians are answerable of their wicked deeds in front of the nation. All the politicians have become more conscious of the role owing to the presence of media at every nook and corner. Besides these things, some elements in media are also trying to destabilize the democratic system to gain specific interests. In short, Media has laid great impact over Pakistani politics.

It is said that Pakistani Media is growing rapidly, but it is still in its youth. Previously, in Pakistan there were only two or three channels working in the country. Now After the Musharraf regime, Media is growing immensely and it is a good omen. The need is that, Media should project every thing impartially. It is envisaged that media is showing maturity with the passage of time.

Since the inception of Pakistan, every previous government tried to control media to get their deeds hidden from the nation. But oppression and repression could not go long. Every government has to take back stop on the matter of Media. Even Gen. Musharraf gave the Media freedom it demanded from every government, but it was for a very short time. When Musharraf realized the power of media he also slapped a ban over the mouth of media. The present Government, “though claims as the democratic government”, had also done the same with many different channels like GEO TV.

The dawn of media has raised the field of education to the acme of technology. Many a universities are getting sophistication in imparting knowledge due to the advancement of media. Open University of Islamabad and Virtual University of Pakistan are making full use of Media to impart knowledge. Beside these Universities, more or less all universities are using Media to enhance the quality of education. The future of Media regarding the education is very bright. In addition to this, channels like Dawn and Express 7/24 are a big source of knowledge for students of competitive examinations, because along with the written news they have got another plate forum to interpret the change of language within their own cultural and political environment.

So far as the concern of awareness, media is really hitting the road in this task. Uptil today at many events, media has made the masses aware of the particular concerns like the matter of NRO and the trial of Pervaiz Musharraf. At many occasions media has performed his duty to infuse the right stance against the wrong policies of Government. Before the strong emergence of electronic media, the illiterate people were not able to get into the matters of grave concerns owing to their illiteracy. Now even an illiterate who can’t read newspaper may understand the affairs of state very easily. The time has shown that Media is really becoming the forth pillar of state in real sense.

Media has given rise also to the Advertising Industry as many advertising agencies have come into existence with the rise of media. The different channels are working in collaboration with advertising agencies to get their financial ends. This trend has given rise to the advertising agencies and this sector has become an industry in itself.

There are many elements which are trying to dictate media. Some of them are with government and some are out of government. Even some elements are out side of the borders which are trying to encircle the freedom of the Pakistani media. Government is dictating media by giving bribes to the higher personalities of media. Different political parties are also getting the favor of media through different measures. Foreign elements are also influencing the media through coercive and monetary measures. Some journalists are not sincere to their obligations of duty. Therefore, they do yellow journalism and bring bad name for the whole of media. Another side of the yellow journalism reveals that some journalists blackmail people to get money or some specific designs. This practice of yellow journalism is a crime both legally and morally. So these practices should be identified and should be penalized.

As it is a general perception that media brings the governments and individuals to the court of accountability through the revelations of facts. So it is also the moral and legal duty of Government and individuals to held media accountable for their wrong doing and wicked deeds. It is suggested that Media persons should made a code of conduct for them to work on. If any person of Media, whether be it a news writer, column writer, news caster or anchor person, held responsible for mal practices or wrong doings they must be punished.

Illegal authority of all media representatives should be curbed. It is very often seen in Pakistan that journalists don’t abide by the laws of the state and give threat to the police and other department’s people. Sometimes, on behalf of their authority they get some illegal ends. These all immoral acts should be condemned and penalized if necessary. It is said, that the duty of Media is to reflect the opinion rather to make the opinion. In contrary to the previous sentence, Media is acting as the opinion maker rather to be an opinion reflector. The essence of Democracy is that media should be impartial and should reflect the opinion.

Around the world, all the nations are working to subjugate other nations. The role of media in pursuit of the goals of nations is very crucial. The World Rising Powers like China and India are exploiting the use of media to the full extent. The future of media is very bright and the role of Media is very crucial. Media should act responsibly and it is Media who in the coming days can bring the change. As far as the concern of Pakistani media, after considering aforementioned facts it is concluded that Media has a great responsibility on its shoulders of reviving the lost dignity and honour of the Pakistani Nation.

I am not very good in essay yet, But according to me these things should be corrected, And do not let you down. Indeed, it is a nice effort. At least better than me.

Quote:
The whole world is bearing the witness of the west hegemony in all spheres of world, and so is the case with the media. The strings of international media are in the hands of west, and west is promulgating whatever there agenda is to make there influence credible and reliable. Basically there are two types of media,
1) Do not criticize anyone in opening paragraph. It is should be persuasive and general rather pointing west or east.

Quote:
America and Israel, through the power of media, are trying to influence Iran. They have allied many a countries with them to oppose Iranian acts in form of UN and EU.
2) I am not agree to this point, how America and Israel influence Iran. Yes influential techniques takes place and used as a tool in war, but in the case of Iran, Iran is defending and given his every and possible feedback to the world even through media. So discuss both situations.

Quote:
Even Pakistani children are singing Indian religious songs, like Banday Mataram.
3) Again, you are discussing the half truth, Yes children are inspire of indian cultural, society etc but don't forget children also hates india just because of media. Cricket match between India and Pakistan is an example to analysis the attitude of children.

Quote:
The present Government, “though claims as the democratic government”, had also done the same with many different channels like GEO TV.
4) Wrong ! No such thing has happened yet, Dr.Shahid Masood is not Geo, but part of geo. I never read that any ban imposes on any TV channel except few individuals.

Quote:
The World Rising Powers like China and India are exploiting the use of media to the full extent.
5) But How? Half-Complete sentence.

Overall, Brother you did the same mistakes which are mentioned in the FPSC website that usually students do in essay paper such as, ANTI-AMERICAN, ANTI-ISRAEL, HALF-SENTENCES, NO FACTS AND FIGURES etc.

And do not forget to maintain balance, You essay looks like a written by pro-pakistani, Do not forget it is also our media which is topping others for action of their slanders attitude, piracy and plagiarism, So we cannot only blame US and West media.

It is a nice essay, I can see you have germs of passing essay paper, Your english is good just maintain the concept in balance.

Regards,

@AUDICIOUS

A very good try. Some suggestions:

1. At first look it seems that you have restricted your discussion to the role of media in Pakistan, I mean much emphasis on its role in Pakistan, and you also discussed its global role in a negative way. There are also positive aspects of western media, discuss those too.

2. You started your essay by this sentence "The modern time shows the power of media, as it has become a monstrous power giant of the modern world today."

The word "mostrous" has a negative connotation. Avoid starting essay with negative remarks.

3. You discussed both positive and negative aspects of media and also provided your solution to the problem in one paragraph. Start giving positive aspects first in some paragraphs and only provide positive aspects. Then proceed to negative points and discuss only those negative points in later paragraphs. In the last provide a summary of positive and negative points and also your solution to the problem in concluding paragraph.

4. You said "There are many elements which are trying to dictate media. Another side of the yellow journalism reveals that some journalists blackmail people to get money or some specific designs. This practice of yellow journalism is a crime both legally and morally. So these practices should be identified and should be penalized."

A man is innocent till proved guilty. So please avoid statements where you are making governments or other factors guilty of influencing media. A better statement would be "It is alleged that government and other elemnts try to influence media......" It can also be stated that "It is believed that government and other elements try to influence media ....".

I will give you 50 out of 100 .

Regards

Essay:

The modern times show the power of the media, as it has become a monstrous power giant of the modern world today. The whole world is bearing the witness of the west hegemony in all spheres of world, and so is the case with the media. The strings of international media are in the hands of west, and west is promulgating whatever there agenda is to make there influence credible and reliable.

-------------------POSSIBLE DIVISION-----------------------------

Basically there are two types of media, Electronic Media and Print Media. Both have their own areas of exercise. Before the monopoly of electronic media, print media had the same monopoly which it has lost now. In Electronic Media there are different types like Television, Radio, VCR, Tape Recorder and the Internet. And owing to the rising power of media, the world’s big powers are exploiting the use of media to the maximum extent to gain their personal designs. However, media is rendering a great service for the good of world’s masses also.

GOOD INTRODUCTION; INDICATES TO THE READER THAT YOU INTEND TO FOCUS ON BOTH PROS AND CONS OF THE MEDIA. NO HARM IN DIVIDING THE PARAGRAPH AS EXAMINERS PREFER SHORTER PARAGRAPHS.

Media has a great importance and utilization in every context of life. Today, one cannot even imagine the(omit) life without media. Media has made us aware of our surroundings. In past it was really difficult to know each and every thing about distant areas, but today we can even know the news about far flung areas. Regardless of the fact that the west is using media treacherously, the importance of media is undeniable.

Good point but please concentrate on using neutral words, avoid using very basic words like ‘bad’ as they create a weak impression on the examiner, please rephrase it something like:

“The impact and usage of media is not harmful in anyway, however, exploitation of the medium can lead to undesired results such as propaganda, malicious campaigns against individuals, and distortion of the truth”.

I have re-written the point without the using any emotive language, and plus expanded upon your point to make it more analytical.

It is evident,(remove comma) by the power of media, that media influences the individuals(consider the word “masses”) and nations. America and Israel, through the power of media, are trying to influence Iran. They have allied many a(omit) countries with them to oppose Iranian acts in form of UN and EU. They are leading a mass Media campaign to urge all the countries and nations against Iran’s nuclear program. There are many other examples of (can be omitted)

Media’s influence over the Society and Culture(remove capitals), like the Indian Media today is influencing Pakistani Culture and Society very seriously. Even Pakistani children are singing Indian religious songs, like Banday Mataram. This was a trailer of Media’s influence over masses, now we turn the talk toward the individuals. It is observed that Media, in any society, affects the behavior of individuals and particularly of children. Media also is an opinion maker, through the editorials and analysis-columns of different newspapers; it makes opinion of individuals and masses. So it is vivid that media influences extremely and it is an undeniable fact.

Please use better vocab, instead of sayingnow we turn the talk toward the individuals”, rephrase it by saying “let us focus on the effects of Media on individuals….”

Avoid using conversation style language,

Overall, a very well written paragraph in terms of content, it thoroughly explains the effects of over exposure to the media but please do consider dividing the paragraph.

The role which media is playing is not hidden to the sight of anyone. From the international media to the local media, it is seen that the policy makers of media is (‘are’ instead of ‘is’) working on their specific agendas. As we earlier mentioned that west is working to dominate the whole world and the media campaign of west is part of their New World Order. The aim of western countries, particularly America, is to dominate the whole countries(consider using ‘world’) and to keep them under their sway, to get their interests out of specific regions; and for that they are experiencing (replace with ‘executing’) every type of media campaign. The enmity of west against Islam is not new, which is prevailing very rapidly in western countries, and they are trying to debase Islam and Islamic holy personalities through loathsome measures of media. The act of Denmark’s journalist was an episode of this serial. At the other hand(on the other hand), on local Media, it is examined that the media organizations are working on some specific docket to fuel their channels. Government is also trying to dictate different channels to spoke (Speak) in favour of them. Even every sect of politicians has made their personal channels to promote their ideology. Even though, these things do not come in the domain and ethics of media.

The actual role of media is to reflect whatever the truth is. Every side of any issue, dark and white, should be revealed to the masses and to leave it upon them the(to) analyze. Rather than facts maker, the duty of media should be fact revealer. It is not hidden that what international and local media is presenting over media. If somewhere there is a bomb blasted(Bomb blast), the figures of dead and injured, which are told to the people, are not true. These all aforementioned things are the form of Media’s Power.

The Media in Pakistan has passed a long thorny way to reach where it is standing now. Today, in Pakistan, Media is so strong (media is independent, avoid using the word ‘strong’) The history of Pakistani media is battered with harsh measures of previous governments except the very earliest government. The influence and power of media in Pakistan is not restricted only to the Political sphere of country, but its also influencing all other spheres of concern.

In terms of factual knowledge, please consider the following points:

During the tenure of Nawaz Sharif and BB, only state media existed, therefore, it is not factually correct to say that there was any ban on the media; however they used the state media to their advantage by not broadcasting views of other parties.

It is rightly said by you that the media is the fourth pillar, please expand your point by adding that an independent media functions as a form of safeguard against exploitation/misuse of power.

Please avoid making such statements like It is very difficult to collide with media’, it is generally believed that all pillars of state are equal in power, therefore, not a good idea to make this statement as it is giving the impression that media is more influential than other organs of state.

Use the phrase ‘curbing media freedom’ instead of ‘slapping a ban’

The Media has a great impact over the culture and society of Pakistan. Media is playing a crucial role in molding the true Pakistani culture through demonstrating different folk and cultural shows. Besides these things, some vulgar programs and dramas are also being promulgated on media, which are very harmful and making people obscene and absurd(not appropriate to use the absurd). These types of dramas should not be appreciated and must be(omit) vanish from the screen.

Due to the pressure of Media, Politicians are answerable of their(for their) wicked deeds in front of the nation.

Up till today at many events, media has made the masses aware of the particular concerns like the matter of NRO and the trial of Pervaiz Musharraf(Still a figment of imagination, not a reality).

It is suggested that Media persons should made(make) a code of conduct for them to work on.

A good effort, I have gone through your essay but not in full detail due to lack of time, I would urge your to check for grammar mistakes, I tried to point out as many I as I could, the first thing the examiner checks is the grammar, then the content of the essay. Please re-check your essay for grammatical errors.

In terms of the content, a balanced essay on the role of media and the influence of the media, few factual errors which I pointed out should be re-checked by you, I would advise you to include the following points:

  • The role of the state media.
  • The effects of the monopoly of certain media barons, for e.g. the jang group.
  • The role of regulatory bodies such as PEMRA.

Please avoid anti-American or anti-Israel sentiments as they are merely based on conspiracy theories and not facts, examiners prefer neutral essays rather than anti-west sentiments.

Avoid using any emotive language, go through your essay and highlight any word which may have a negative connotation attach to it, for e.g. words like bad, harsh etc etc.

To write a balanced essay, you must include both the good and the bad points, in your essay, you have demonstrated both the positive and negative aspects of the media. I do believe the paragraph about ‘Pakistani Dramas’ is irrelevant as the focus of the essay should be on disseminating information through media, rather than the entertainment/recreational side of the media.

Slight repetition in the essay about virtual university, please re-read your essay to avoid repetition.

There is always room for improvement, I would suggest that you read other essays on this topic for improvement, and prepare for other topics as well as there is not guarantee that media will be the topic examined in 2010. Try reading Noam Chomsky’s news values, relevant to news broadcasting. There is no discussion about print media in detail; it would be a good idea to include that as well.

PLEASE NOTE: THE POINTS EXPRESSED ABOVE ARE PURELY BASED UPON MY PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE, I AM NOT AN EXAMINER OF CSS, I HAVE BEEN EXTENSIVELY RESEARCHING ON CSS EXAMS AND TECHNIQUES, I DO NOT CLAIM TO BE AN EXPERT ON THIS SUBJECT, I AM MERELY EXPRESSING MY OWN VIEWS TO HELP THOSE ARE GOING TO ATTEMPT CSS. ALL MY POINTS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS ADVICE ONLY AND NOT THE FINAL VERDICT BECAUSE EVEN I COULD BE WRONG

Dear audacious you have been rightly guided by fellows especially by newstudent and vicky. You need to do some more work on outline of essay. For example any essay can hv following main points/headings;

Introduction
Main body (main body can have multiple number of sub-headings e.g. history of issue/background, causes, reasons, remedies etc etc.)
Own view point
Conclusion

You must add introduction whenever you try to write any essay. Introduction should be sound and strong, it may contain some quotations as well as poetic verses. Further, you may add a category/sub-heading of your own view point, wherein you may write your own perceptions about the topic of essay. At the end of any essay comes conclusion, which is culminating point of your whole discussion made in the essay. Intro, own view point and conclusion should have strong convincing language and should not have any grammatical mistakes/flaws. You may collect words for intro and conclusion from articles of different writers. ...

Best of luck.

@ sAHILSHAH

Thank you brother for nice suggestions. No doubt that your risen points are considerable, but I had reshuffled them many times before writing the whole essay. According to my humble approach, I tried to proceed in a manner that International aspects first, then focused on National Media regarding Pakistan as we are all supposed to write as Pakistanis. Your risen points are definitely valuable and sizable, Insha-Allah in next essay, which I would post here, you will see improvements. Again thanks for your suggestions. Pray for all of the aspirants who are going to attempt CE-2010 including me.

Regards
