It plays very important role in the contribution of gross-domestic product of the country. The countries of the world are said to be prosperous when their industrial sector is strong. The strong position of the industrial sector depends upon energy. Different countries utilize different sources of energy to run their industrial sector. But the most and cheapest source of energy is obtained from hydel form. Pakistan is among those countries whose energy is produced from hydel sources. Therefore, Pakistan’s more reliance on water and the hegemony of India has caused Pakistan to suffer a lot in term of energy crisis. The energy crisis has caused the industrial sector to face many challenges. The challenges like, low output from the investment, the country prefers import causing inflation. However, these challenges can be reduced/met to some extent by harnessing the other natural resources, so as our industrial sector can run without any hindrance. Let’s discuss the importance of industrial sector in detail. The industrial sector of any country contributes major share in the GDP. Pakistan’s industrial sector contributes 24% in gross-domestic product. The GDP is the overall output of what Pakistan earns from its internal resources. The total amount of GDP is utilized on the welfare of the country. The country in the world is judged financially according to the growth of GDP ratio. The good ratio of GDP attracts the world and hence FDI. The good ratio of GDP encourages the government to provide a healthy environment to industrialist and public sector. Resultantly the masses of the country find room of job opportunity. Similarly, healthy environment attracts the foreign investors. It is the foreign investment which helps country to be counted among developed and prosperous countries. The countries which witness/experience the foreign direct investment when they fulfil their needs. The needs like basic infrastructure covering roads, transportation, water supply etc. not only fulfil the need of other countries service sector but also local masses benefit of it. This is the main reason behind the boosting economy of India and China. Furthermore, good FDI boosts the economy of the country. Boosting economy helps in fulfilling the basic infrastructure needs. Basic infrastructure includes roads and transportation, water supply and distribution and sanitation etc. Industries cannot be run properly without the basic infrastructure. So, when the basic infrastructure needs are fulfilled, not only do industries take advantage but the masses are also benefitted. But the industrial sector in Pakistan has not been up to the mark due to energy crisis. Energy crisis, since independence, has remained a major concern of the governments of the time. But since then no concrete solution has been sought for it. The reasons behind it there are many causes responsible to be overcome. Let’s discuss the different causes of energy crisis. The foremost cause is the only reliance on water. The reason behind it that the other resources such as wind, tidal nuclear are very expensive to afford. Despite the more reliance on water Pakistan has not produced the required energy from hydel sources. It is because, after the independence, Pakistan and India divided six rivers Vis Indus, Jhelum, Chenab and Ravi, Sutlej Beas respectively. Under this agreement both countries had/have to use their due share of water of their respective rivers. But unfortunately, India did not abide by Indus Basin Treaty of 1960. Result of which Pakistan’s due share of water being stopped by the construction of Kishanganga, Wullar Barrage from Indian side. This hegemony of India has not only affected our agricultural sector but also has crippled energy sector. Furthermore, provincial prejudices and politics are subtly fuelling up the crisis. Our country is rich in natural resources but disharmony between provinces and the centre has led to uselessness of these precious resources. Thar Coal project is one of the examples. A single Thar Coal Reserve of Sind is about 850 trillion cubic feet (TCF), which is more than oil reserves of Saudi Arabia and Iran. Just 2% usage of Thar Coal can produce 20000 MW of electricity for next 40 years. If these reservoirs are properly used then they can fulfil the need of the country for many years. Of the chronic factors, the heavy line losses at the hands of administration has turned the energy crisis into worse condition. The above mentioned causes of energy crisis have deteriorated the industrial sector. Let’s discuss the impacts on the industrial sector. As mentioned earlier, the industrial sector contributes major share to the GDP of the country. Owing to persistent energy crisis, many units have been shut down. Resultantly, causing our GDP to decline. Decline in GDP of the country indicates its economic backwardness. Country with low GDP growth fails to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Poor economic condition of the country has not only kept the foreign investors but the local as well. When the conditions for industrial sector are not healthy in the country, the inflow of foreign money to the country is checked causing decline in foreign reserves. Decline in foreign reserves compel the country to seek loans from the other countries. With unhealthy conditions and decline in foreign reserves, the country is destined to face low export and high import. It is also the case with our industrial sector. Due to inconsistent supply of electricity to industrial sector, our industry fails to give required output. Not to speak of surplus production, our industries are not able to meet the national requirement. The production of goods in lesser quantities has affected export from our industrial sector. This makes our country to import goods, in order to meet the needs of the masses causing inflation. Moreover, energy crisis is the core reason behind de-industrialization process in our country. The closure of small and big industries deprives our people of employment or job opportunities. Industries failing to create new jobs, lead to wastage of precious talent in the country. The overall poor condition compels the youth to migrate somewhere for earning. This indirectly is depriving the country of its talented youth. However, the current situation seem to be very bad, but the pragmatic approach can solve this. Therefore, it is the need of time that government should focus on following suggestions. Firstly, the government should focus on other resources besides water. For example wind, nuclear, tidal, solar etc. The one study shows that wind pressure of country’s coastal line can produce up to 100,000 Mw of electricity. Secondly, the four provinces of the country are said to be the limbs of Pakistan. They should work together for the welfare of the country. For example, the proper utilization of natural resources lying in different parts of the country and the royalty over them to be paid by centre to promote inter-provincial harmony. Thirdly, proper implementation of Indus Basin Treaty as signed in 1960. The World Bank played its role as arbitrator between India and Pakistan. Therefore, India should be pressurized from World Bank to abide by the treaty. Further, nuclear technology be properly used in this regard. No doubt, this technology contributes very low quantity. But Pakistan should try to get maximum benefit of it. This all is possible when there is strong system of checks and balances. If the energy crisis is solved, it would not only facilitate the local industrialists but also foreigners. Similarly, latest technology must be introduced to our industrial sector. Concerted efforts will have to be made towards moving the industry into a higher technological orbit to produce value-added goods that are competitively priced in the international markets. To enable industrialists to up-grade their technology, import of new machinery and equipment should be exempted from import duty and sales tax. In addition, keeping in view that not all manufacturers may have the necessary resources to invest in brand new machinery and equipment, import of second-hand machinery may be allowed. In addition to latest technology our industry needs skilled labourers to run modern machinery. Without skilled labourers modern machinery would be of no use to run our industry. For his, technical institutions, on the basis of the modern industrial needs, be established. In these institutions, experienced teachers be engaged. These teachers can train labourers through modern scientific techniques cater to the requirement of our industry. Last but not least, industrialist must be given loans on easy intallments so that they could extend their business keeping in view the moderns demands of globalizations. To conclude, the industrial sector and energy are directly proportional/inter-dependent on each other. Without one sector the other is of no value. Therefore, to beat the time it is necessary that Pakistan’s both sectors be brought at the level required by the developed countries of the world. We have very experience of China and India having the world largest population are emerging as powerful countries in the world. The reason behind that they have come to know how policies be made and be implemented. Therefore, Pakistan needs to follow their way of emergence. If Pakistan can borrow money from world countries then why not their policies for the betterment of the country. |

very good attempt.your sequence in writing this essay was very good.but there are some loopholes which i want to mention for your best performance next time.you wrote at some places that let discuss the causes or whatever like this.it is not appropriate to write in essay.and you also did not mention international causes of energy crises.there are three major sectors which use energy like transportation sector, industrial sector and domestic sector and all of these sectors waste energy and they must be guided how to use it in a beneficial way.you must also discuss departments related to energy like ENERCON,WAPDA,KESC,IPP's and etc.
