From Having Been Failed in Islamiat to Obtaining 68 Marks

From Having Been Failed in Islamiat to Obtaining 68 Marks.

I just came across the DMC of a fellow member who has scored impressive in all of his subjects but got failed in Islamiat . This has reminded me my own first attempt of CSS and has prompted me to share my experience that how I overcame my failure in this subject. The same sort of incident had happened with me in my first attempt of CSS. I scored better in all the subjects but I got failed in Islamiat and that too by scoring just 30 marks. Actually by 2010 people never used to fail in Islamiat and that's why the aspirants never took it that serious . I passed English Essay with 40 marks while English Precise and Composition with good 71 marks ,but Islamiat proved to be a nightmare for me.

However, afterwards I took it as a challenge and I was able to score 68 in this very subject. Thats' why one need not be disheartened and should take it as a challenge and with little concentration and extra effort and with some some planning one may score impressive in it.

After having been failed, I brought the following changes in my strategy regarding the preparation of Islamiat.

The very first thing , I took it as a challenge and kept it on priority.

Secondly, I changed the medium from Urdu to English. I have never believed in the myth that attempting the Islamiat Paper gives more marks. Rather, I changed the medium from Urdu to English for the following obvious reasons . Firstly my Urdu handwriting was pathetic and it definitely didn't create a good impression.
Secondly, my Urdu handwriting speed was highly slow which could not help me write answers of five questions.
Thirdly, , I believed that I had somewhat better English expression which could present me as a mature and well placed aspirant in front of the examiner and that's why examiner would take me serious .
For these reasons , I changed my medium from Urdu to English

The third and most important change which I brought in my strategy was that I found Ayat e Quran and Ahadith related to various important and anticipated topics and memorized those in their original Arabic without memorizing their translation. I used to create a context while answering a question , and would quote the Ayat e Quran in real arabic (without Punctuations) with marker . For instance while I was answering a question regarding Women Rights in Islam and I had to elaborate my point by describing women's right in inheritance, I wrote that Islam believes in providing women their share in the inheritance . Allah , in this regard , has ordained in Quran ,
"لِّلرِّجَالِ نَصيِبٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ الْوَالِدَانِ وَ الأَقْرَبُونَ وَ لِلنِّسَاء نَصِيبٌ مِّمَّا تَرَكَ الْوَالِدَانِ وَ الأَقْرَبُونَ مِمَّا قَلَّ مِنْهُ أَوْ كَثُرَ نَصِيبًا مَّفْرُوضًا"
Now I didn't quote the translation as the context in which I had quoted would easily had made examiner understand the aspirants knows the meanings of the ayat thats why he has quoted it in the perfect context . In this way all of my questions carried 6 to 10 ayat e quran plus ahadiths. Believe me , memorizing Ayat e Qurani is far far far far easier then memorizing their translation and the impact the original ayat create on examiner is far stronger then that created by the translation.

Fourthly , I worked on the presentation of the paper and answered all the questions with headings . I kept the paragraphs short and gave self explanatory headings which would get explained by short paragraphs and would make things easier for the examiner.

Fifthly, I focused on time management. I would give equal time to all the questions. As the paper used to start and i would have received the question paper, I would make a rough outline of all the questions . after making that outline , I would start answering the questions one by one by expanding that outline by giving equal time to all the questions. Obviously , it need not be said that one has to write the question first regarding which one has most impressive and relevant knowledge.

For the preparation, I also showed obsession towards reading various books. Prof Arshad Chadhar's book by JWT was one of them. It provided my with good number of Ayats and Ahadith as well as some good concepts. I used to read a topic from 4 to 5 books and would understand the crux of all of them and would note down the main points.

Another important thing which i did was , I prepared objective portion of this paper with an obsession. For this I solved past 15 years CSS Islamiat papers objective and also solved last 5 PMS exam's past papers' Islamiat Objective. Moreover, importantly , I obtained Prof. Zaka sahb 's 1000 point Islamiat Objectice notes which proved highly instrumental in helping strengthen my objective part preparation. Besides these , I went through the Islamiat portion of GK Book of Ahmad Najib. And eventually , I was able to have 16 objective correct.

Another thing, one may quote poetic verses also. Like in one of the question the examiner had asked the difference between jihad and Fitna and I started the answer with the following poetic verse.
نا حق کے لیے اُٹھے تو شمشیر بھی فتنہ
شمشیر کیا ٫ نعرہِ تکبیر بھی فِتنہ

This is the method which really worked for me and that's how , I was able to score 68. Had I been possessed with speedy handwriting , I would have crossed 70 .
The purpose of sharing my experience is to make you think about preparing various subjects with some well thought out strategy .

Bro , my query is a bit irrelevant to the thread but let me ask it .
I have prepared IL but i have felt very uncomfortable with the subject whenever i read it .Because of its scoring trend i opted for it .But now i want to switch it with criminology .
What would you suggest .?
Note : time is short but i had a cursory look of criminology last year .

Thank you for your input. I have failed this subject. Last time, I had very high score. I am unable to understand that what went wrong. I have attempted it in Urdu both times. Now, I am seriously thinking about switching it to English. I have pretty good handwriting to attempt this paper in medium I am comfortable with. I have failed this subject with 18 correct MCQs. Still in shock. Your suggestions are highly valuable. I will try to follow them.

Another reason of my failure in Islamiat was , my somewhat progressive or somewhat secular way of thinking. For instance , the year i failed there was a question regarding ban on by French Authorities, now where I called this action objectionable , some arguments I also gave in its favor. Later, I came to know that this approach was counter productive. That's why in my next attempt , I went with the religious narrative. That's why besides change of medium and besides change of the preparation strategy, keep this thing in also mind that in this paper we have to go with religious narrative , the popular religious narrative.
As well as those 1000 points Objective notes are concerned , they you can find at Punjab University New Campus STC Photocopy Shop. You obtained good 18 marks in objective portion, strengthen that more, so that this score is ensured again. As you know , in CSS every single score matters and these objective marks may really help us create difference.
Best of Luck .

My approach was neither progressive nor secular. I was really careful about that. Writing and preparation strategy was not flawed either. I think my Urdu writing is bit slower than English writing so, I may have not written enough material to convince the examiner. In English, I usually write 6 to 8 pages per question. Sometimes more but never less than 6. In Urdu, I barely touched 6th page in all the questions.
I can conveniently get these notes from Punjab University since I am studying there at the moment. Thank you for suggestion.
I just want to ask something. I had quoted Arabic Verses in my paper when I attempted it in Urdu in 2017 and 2018. Some seniors or even teachers say that we cannot write Arabic text when we attempt our paper in English. Is it true or is it okay to use them since Arabic is different language and it should not make any difference if we attempt our paper in Urdu or English. I know one can use Urdu translation in Urdu medium and English translation in English medium but what about Original Arabic text? I can write in Original Arabic text and I want to use it in my examination. So, share your valuable opinion.

Shahkaar Thursday, September 27, 2018 05:33 PM

You can and should write Arabic text. However, it should be error-free.

That's completely wrong that one can't use Arabic text while attempting the paper in English. First of all i myself did this both in CSS and PMs and in both scored 68 and 69. Secondly, it makes sense if one is using the original Quranic Verses. However, use the Quranic Verses and arabic version of Ahadith without punctuation, without zer o zabar.
Original Arabic text would be easier in preparation and more impactful in presentation.

A Zeee Friday, September 28, 2018 03:04 PM

@Tassawur
Thank you. I was attempting this paper in Urdu because someone misguided me that we cannot write them in English paper. Now, this time I will go with English medium since I can perform better in that language. Yes, I do not use punctuation because I know I will make mistakes and this can decrease my score further. I will try to write original Arabic Verses and Ahadith without punctuation next time InShaAllah.

@Shahkaar
Thank you for your valuable suggestion. I have noted and will try my best to follow.

It depends on one's preparation even then. For instance , i had prepared and memorized the relevant Ayyat from Quran and also prepared translation of some of them in English. On the other hand if you have prepared the translation in Urdu , or have some taste of Urdu poetry and you can quote relevant poetic verses also , you may go with Urdu.

(As that person Shahkaar posted it nearly 6 months ago ,so i am answering it .hopefully, he will answer it later)

Do all these things as per given in this thread for Urdu version and you will get same results, i think these strategies are general ones and applicable to both ;english and urdu languages . What Tasswur has shared will work for urdu too . You will have to give references of Ayahs and Ahadith , with it of some books . Then , as he has written it that outline at the start of answers ,then headings with one paragraph explanation . I think this stuff is good for every paper , and can boost your score.

Maybe , here i can add one thing that if one is going to give attempt in urdu then do read Friday Features in Urdu newspapers ,be it Daily Jang or Nawa-i-waqt etc . One of my friend scored 78 ,and all he had to say after result was that his high score is a result of this fact that he never missed any Friday feature during his preparation and that thing helped him in tackling Islamiat paper . And here i am talking about CE-2014 ,when most of the candidates failed in Islamiat .

can you plz share your notes or give some tips .. becoz 75 is amazing score in such a paper

Urooj rajput Friday, October 15, 2021 07:12 AM

I opted both times in english. In my first attempt I scored 39 and in my second attempt I scored 46. I wrote at least 10 ayat in each answer with Arabic version and translation in my second attempt. Also I gave references from ahadis and books. Along with that, I prepared past papers mcqs for islamic studies. And I gave balanced answers to all the questions. However I could never completely cover the whole syllabus and each time I gave answers on my own and through references. I am going to appear in 2022 for the last attempt and I have heard that in urdu, one either gets failed or gets exceptionally good marks. I am switching it from English to urdu. should I? Also I had learnt some stanzas from Allama iqbal's poetry in urdu, and used to quotes them in Islamic Studies in urdu during my bachelors some 8 years ago.... Back then, I was good at attempting paper in urdu. But in CSS, I never trird for Islamic Studies in urdu. So should I replace it with urdu or should I not..? please answer soon so that I may start preparing for the subject..
