Lightbulb The Glorious Qur'an!

“THE GLORIOUS QUR’AN”

All praise to Allaah the Lord of the Worlds and peace and blessings to our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) and to his family and the companions and to those who follow their path.

When we ask any Muslim, which is the best Book on the face of the earth, almost all will respond ‘THE QUR’AN’!. That’s really wonderful, Alhumdulillaah, there is no doubt that the best speech is of Allaah! But when we ask our Muslim brothers and Sisters to talk about ‘THE QUR’AN’ for 5 mins, you observe how many of them gives solid information about the virtues and other aspects of the Qur’an, without going blank! In my small experience from adults to youths, they couldn’t speak about Qur’an for even 2 mins properly! Iam talking about the Muslims who are students, business people etc., Iam not talking about the scholars and students of knowledge in Islaam. This is really a sad situation of our Ummah. There are people who can talk about their favorite sports magazine/entertainment magazine/ favorite best seller for hours but what the Kalaam of Allaah?

Aren’t we Muslims suppose to know much about the Qur'an? It is obligatory upon every Muslim to know about the Book, which Almighty Allaah revealed to our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) for our salvation. As Ramadaan the month of Qur’an, I thought I would share some brief information regarding the Qur’an. May almighty Allaah accept your fast and mine and accept all our ibaadah and forgive our sins and reward us with Jannah-Aameen.

I.THE QUR’AN
The Definition of the Qur’an:
The linguistic meaning of the Qur’an: The word ‘Qur’an’ is derived from “qara’a” which means ‘to read’ ‘to recite’. Qur’an would then be verbal noun of “qara’a”, and thus translates as ‘The Recitation’ or ‘The Reading’.

Definition: The Qur’an is the Arabic speech (Kalaam) of Allaah, which He revealed to Muhammad (peace be upon him) in wording and meaning, and which has been preserved in the ‘Mushafs’ and has reached us by ‘mutawaatir’ transmissions and is a challenge to mankind to produce something similar to it.

b. Qur’an as it describes itself:
The best and the most authentic way to describe the Qur’an would be to quote what it has to say concerning itself. The believers are told to rejoice in the revelation that Allaah has sent down,

“Say: "In the Bounty of Allâh, and in His Mercy (i.e. Islâm and the Qur'ân); -therein let them rejoice." That is better than what (the wealth) they amass.”
The Noble Qur’an 10:58

2. It’s a convincing proof and manifest light!

O mankind! Verily, there has come to you a convincing proof (Prophet Muhammad ) from your Lord, and We sent down to you a manifest light (this Qur'ân).
The Noble Qur’an 4:174

3. It’s a good advice, healing to heart, guidance, and mercy to mankind

“O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord (i.e. the Qur'an, ordering all that is good and forbidding all that is evil), and a healing for that (disease of ignorance, doubt, hypocrisy and differences, etc.) in your breasts, - a guidance and a mercy (explaining lawful and unlawful things, etc.) for the believers.”
The Noble Qur’an 10:57

4. It is Straight warning to disbelievers and glad tidings to the believers
“All the praises and thanks be to Allâh, Who has sent down to His slave (Muhammad) the Book (the Qur'ân), and has not placed therein any crookedness.

(He has made it) Straight to give warning (to the disbelievers) of a severe punishment from Him, and to give glad tidings to the believers (in the Oneness of Allâh Islâmic Monotheism), who work righteous deeds, that they shall have a fair reward (i.e. Paradise).” The Noble Qur’an 18:1-2

5. It is Healing and mercy to the believers

“And We send down from the Qur'ân that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe (in Islâmic Monotheism and act on it), and it increases the Zâliműn (polytheists and wrong-doers) nothing but loss.” The Noble Qur’an 17:82

6. It is the best Statement!

“Allâh has sent down the best statement, a Book (this Qur'ân), its parts resembling each other in goodness and truth, oft-repeated.”
The Noble Qur’an 39:23

7, It is the Book of Truth!

“Verily, We have sent down to you (O Muhammad Sal-Allaahu 'alayhe Wa Sallam) the Book (this Qur'ân) for mankind in truth. So whosoever accepts the guidance, it is only for his ownself, and whosoever goes astray, he goes astray only for his (own) loss. And you (O Muhammad Sal-Allaahu 'alayhe Wa Sallam) are not a Wakîl (trustee or disposer of affairs, or keeper) over them.” The Noble Qur’an 39:41

8. It is a Blessed Reminder!

“And this is a blessed Reminder (the Qur'ân) which We have sent down, will you then (dare to) deny it?”
The Noble Qur’an 21:50

9. It is an inspiration and mercy and light of guidance!

“And thus We have sent to you (O Muhammad Sal-Allaahu 'alayhe Wa Sallam) Ruhan (an Inspiration, and a Mercy) of Our Command. You knew not what is the Book, nor what is Faith? But We have made it (this Qur'ân) a light wherewith We guide whosoever of Our slaves We will. And verily, you (O Muhammad Sal-Allaahu 'alayhe Wa Sallam) are indeed guiding (mankind) to the Straight Path (i.e. Allâh's religion of Islâmic Monotheism).”
The Noble Qur’an 42:52

10. It is a clear insight and evidence for mankind!
“This (Qur'ân) is a clear insight and evidence for mankind, and a guidance and a mercy for people who have Faith with certainty .” The Noble Qur’an 45:20

c. Sunnah as it describes the Qur’an:
The importance of the Qur’an is so great that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

Narrated by Uthman
‘The Best of you are those who learn Qur’an and teach it to others’
Sahih Bukharee Ch:61 Hadith:# 545

Narrated by Uthman bin Affan
‘The Superior among you are those who learn Qur’an and teach it to others’
Sahih Bukharee Ch:61 Hadith:# 546

Although this ahadeeth is most often used in the context of teaching the recitation and memorization of the Qur’an, there is no reason not to extend the meaning of these ahadeeth to include all the Sciences of the Qur’an. After all, of what good is the recitation of the Qur’an if that Recitation is not accompanied by understanding & action?

II. STATUS OF QUR’AN
1. Jubayr reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Rejoice! For verily, this Qur’an-one part of it is in the Hands of Allaah, and the other part is in your hands. Therefore hold on to it, for you will never be destroyed, not will you ever go astray after it! -Musnad Ahmad

2. Umar (radiAllaahu anhu) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘Indeed Allaah will raise (or honor) people (i.e. in this world and in Hereafter) by this Book, and He will debase others by it.
-Muslim

3. Anas(radiAllaahu anhu) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “verily, Allaah has chosen people amongst mankind. The people of the Qur’an- they are the people of Allaah, and His chosen one’s. -An-Nasa’ee

4. Abu Huraira(radiAllaahu anhu) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, Never do a group of people gather together in one of the houses of Allaah, reciting the book of Allaah and pondering over it, except that peace descends upon them, and mercy surrounds them, and the angels encircle them, and Allaah remembers them in His gatherings. -Aboo Dawood

III. WAHY
Wahy means to ‘inspire’, or ‘to communicate in a manner that is not obvious or apparent to anybody else, in a swift manner’.

“And your Lord inspired the bee, saying: "Take you habitations in the mountains and in the trees and in what they erect.” The Noble Qur’an 16:68

“And We inspired the mother of Műsa (Moses), (saying): "Suckle him [Műsa (Moses)], but when you fear for him, then cast him into the river and fear not, nor grieve. Verily! We shall bring him back to you, and shall make him one of (Our) Messengers."”
The Noble Qur’an 28:7

“(Remember) when your Lord inspired the angels, "Verily, I am with you, so keep firm those who have believed. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who have disbelieved, so strike them over the necks, and smite over all their fingers and toes."”
The Noble Qur’an 8:12

“It is not given to any human being that Allâh should speak to him unless (it be) by Inspiration, or from behind a veil, or (that) He sends a Messenger to reveal what He wills by His Leave. Verily, He is Most High, Most Wise.” The Noble Qur’an 42:51

TYPES OF WAHY:
i.with intermediary
ii.without intermediary

ii. without intermediary:
a.By way of Dreams:
Aa’isha (RadiAllaahu anha) reports, ‘The commencement of the divine inspiration upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) was in the form of good dreams. He never used to dream about anything except that it came true like rising sun.
Sahih Bukharee Ch: 1, H: #3

“Indeed Allâh shall fulfil the true vision which He showed to His Messenger (Sal-Allaahu 'alayhe Wa Sallam) in very truth.”
The Noble Qur’an 48:27

b.Direct Speech from Allaah:
This is the second way in which Allaah communicates to Prophets directly.

“And when Műsa (Moses) came at the time and place appointed by Us, and his Lord spoke to him,”
The Noble Qur’an 7:143

This method of wahy occurred once with the Prophet (Peace be upon him), when he went on his journey of al-Isra wa al-Mi’raaj.

i.with intermediary:
This is the primary and most common method of inspiration. This method of wahy is when Allaah sends an angel to inspire His Messenger.

“It is not given to any human being that Allâh should speak to him unless (it be) by Inspiration, or from behind a veil, or (that) He sends a Messenger to reveal what He wills by His Leave. Verily, He is Most High, Most Wise .”
The Noble Qur’an 42:51

This messenger was sometimes seen by the Prophet (peace be upon him) and sometimes hidden.

IV. THE REVELATION OF THE QURAN TO THE PROPHET(PEACE BE UPON HIM) FROM JIBREEL :
This occurs in two ways:

1. The Revelation came to Prophet (peace be upon him) in a very severe manner, like the ringing of a bell. This was the hardest for the Prophet (peace be upon him), and it is reported that he used to break into a sweat, even as very cold night, when he was being inspired to him.

“Verily, We shall send down to you a weighty Word” The Noble Qur’an 73:5

2. Jibreel took as the form of a man and came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) this type of inspiration was easier for the Prophet (peace be upon him).

The proof for these two methods is found in the Hadeeth of Aa’isha, in which she stated that Haarith ibn Hishaam asked the Prophet (peace be upon him), “ O! Allaah’s Messenger! How is the devine message revealed to you?” He (peace be upon him) responded, “Sometimes it comes to me like the ringing of a bell. This is the hardest on me, and this state passes of after I have grasped what he says”
(Sahih Bukharee, Vol.1, ch:1, Hadith: #2)

V. THE WISDOM BEHIND THE GRADUAL REVELATION
If Allaah had willed, the Qur’an would have sent down in its entirely to the Prophet (peace be upon him) at the beginning of his Prophethood just like the previous scriptures. The Qur’an infact refers to its gradual revelation in many verses and from these verses some of the merits and the benefits of this peace-meal revelation can be understood.

“And (it is) a Qur'ân which We have divided (into parts), in order that you might recite it to men at intervals. And We have revealed it by stages.”
The Noble Qur’an 17:106

when the disbelievers mocked the gradual revelation of the Qur’an and challenged the Prophet (peace be upon him) to bring forth the Qur’an in its entirety, Allaah revealed

“And those who disbelieve say: "Why is not the Qur'ân revealed to him all at once?" Thus (it is sent down in parts), that We may strengthen your heart thereby. And We have revealed it to you gradually, in stages.” The Noble Qur’an 25:32

Thus following are the benefits of the gradual revelation:

1. To strengthen the resolve of the prophet(peace be upon him) against the disbelievers.
The disbelievers mocked, ridiculed him claimed that he was a sorcerer, a madman or that he was possessed by the Jinn. Allaah reminds him

“ Thus (it is sent down in parts), that We may strengthen your heart thereby. And We have revealed it to you gradually, in stages.” The Noble Qur’an 25:32

2. To simplify its memorization and understanding by the companions:
The peace-meal revelations of the Qur’an made it easier for the companions to understand, memorize and implement the portions that were revealed. If the Qur’an had been revealed all at once, it might have been very difficult for the companions to understand all of its verses properly. Yet, with gradual revelations the companions understood and implemented the Qur’an correctly.

3. To prove the truthfulness of the Prophet (peace be upon him):
Idolaters and the Ahle-Kitaab used to ask the Prophet (peace be upon him) questions in order to outwit him, but every time Allaah will reply to their queries.

“And no example or similitude do they bring (to oppose or to find fault in you or in this Qur'ân), but We reveal to you the truth (against that similitude or example), and the better explanation thereof.”
The Noble Qur’an 25:33

included in this category are the answers that the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave to the problems that the believers faced. Whenever a situation or crisis arose, the Qur’an would clearly layout the solution. For e.g When Khawlah bint Tha’labah complained to the Prophet (peace be upon him) that her husband had made himself unlawful to her, Allaah revealed

“Indeed Allâh has heard the statement of her (Khaulah bint Tha'labah) that disputes with you (O Muhammad Sal-Allaahu 'alayhe Wa Sallam) concerning her husband (Aus bin AsSâmit), and complains to Allâh. And Allâh hears the argument between you both. Verily, Allâh is All-Hearer, All-Seer.”
The Noble Qur’an 58:1

4. To prove the miraculous nature of the Qur’an:
Indeed, one of the most outstanding of the Qur’an was that it was revealed over a period of two decades; it answered many questions from believers, idolaters, it catered to a plethora of situations, it solved a wide variety of problems, it frequently commanded the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Believers to a course of action, and yet not a single of its 6000+ verses is contradicted by another!

To add to its miraculous nature, the order and arrangement of the verses was not done chronologically rather, Prophet (peace be upon him) would instruct his companions of the locations of any new verses. The Qur’an was literally assembled out of the fragment revelations. It was as if an intricate puzzle was perfectly pieced together during a period of over 2 decades to form a flawless master piece.

5. To reveal the laws of Islaam: Sha’riah – in a gradual manner.
Among the blessings of Allaah to the companions is that He revealed to them the laws of Islaam gradually, and thus made it easier for them to adopt these laws.

6. To ease the revelation process on the Prophet (peace be upon him):
The process of inspiration, or wahy was a difficult one for the Prophet(peace be upon him),at times, he used sweat profusely, even on a cold night, because of the severity of the inspiration. Had the Qur’an been revealed all at once it might have been too difficult for the Prophet (peace be upon him) to bear.

VI. THE COMPILATION OF THE QUR’AN
The compilation of the Qur’an is unique, phenomenon that is peculiar to Islaamic history for no other religious book can claim to be anywhere near as authentic as the Qur’an.
“Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur'ân) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption) .”
The Noble Qur’an 15:9

and when the Prophet (peace be upon him) was fearful of forgetting its verses, Allaah revealed
“Move not your tongue concerning (the Qur'ân, O Muhammad Sal-Allaahu 'alayhe Wa Sallam) to make haste therewith.

It is for Us to collect it and to give you (O Muhammad Sal-Allaahu 'alayhe Wa Sallam) the ability to recite it (the Qur'ân),”
The Noble Qur’an 75:16-17

Allaah describes the Qur’an as,

“And verily, it is an honourable respected Book (because it is Allâh's Speech, and He has protected it from corruption, etc.).

Falsehood cannot come to it from before it or behind it (it is) sent down by the All-Wise, Worthy of all praise”
The Noble Qur’an 41:41-42

a. During the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) life:
The Prophet was sent to an illiterate nation, as the Qur’an itself alludes to

“He it is Who sent among the unlettered ones a Messenger (Muhammad Sal-Allaahu 'alayhe Wa Sallam) from among themselves, reciting to them His Verses, purifying them (from the filth of disbelief and polytheism), and teaching them the Book (this Qur'ân, Islâmic laws and Islâmic jurisprudence) and Al-Hikmah (As-Sunnah: legal ways, orders, acts of worship, etc. of Prophet Muhammad Sal-Allaahu 'alayhe Wa Sallam). And verily, they had been before in mainfest error;” The Noble Qur’an 62:2

Not only the nation but the Prophet too!
“So believe in Allâh and His Messenger (Muhammad), the Prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e. Muhammad ) who believes in Allâh and His Words [(this Qur'ân),..”
The Noble Qur’an 7:158

VII. THE MIRACULOUS NATURE OF THE QUR’AN
a. The Challenge:
These verses are called verses of ‘Tahaddi’ (challenge) and this challenge proves the inimitable and miraculous quality of the Qur’an. There are 5 verses of challenge in the Qur’an

1. “And if you (Arab pagans, Jews, and Christians) are in doubt concerning that which We have sent down (i.e. the Qur'ân) to Our slave (Muhammad Sal-Allaahu 'alayhe Wa Sallam), then produce a Sűrah (chapter) of the like thereof and call your witnesses (supporters and helpers) besides Allâh, if you are truthful.

But if you do it not, and you can never do it, then fear the Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.”
The Noble Qur’an 2:23-24

2. “Or do they say: "He (Muhammad) has forged it?" Say: "Bring then a Sűrah (chapter) like unto it, and call upon whomsoever you can, besides Allâh, if you are truthful!"”
The Noble Qur’an 10:38

3. “Or they say, "He (Prophet Muhammad ) forged it (the Qur'an)." Say: "Bring you then ten forged Sűrah (chapters) like unto it, and call whomsoever you can, other than Allâh (to your help), if you speak the truth!" The Noble Qur’an 11:13

4. “Say: "If the mankind and the jinns were together to produce the like of this Qur'ân, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they helped one another." The Noble Qur’an 17:88

5. “Or do they say: "He (Muhammad Sal-Allaahu 'alayhe Wa Sallam) has forged it (this Qur'ân)?" Nay! They believe not! Let them then produce a recital like unto it (the Qur'ân) if they are truthful.”
The Noble Qur’an 52:33-34

b. Qur’an as the Miracle of the Prophet (peace be upon him)
The Qur’an is the miracle of the Prophet (peace be upon him). He (peace be upon him) was given this miracle as ultimate proof of his Prophethood.

“And they say: "Why are not signs sent down to him from his Lord? Say: "The signs are only with Allâh, and I am only a plain warner."

Is it not sufficient for them that We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur'ân) which is recited to them? Verily, herein is mercy and a reminder (or an admonition) for a people who believe.”
The Noble Qur’an 29:50-51

VIII. WHAT MAKES QUR’AN MIRACULOUS?

a.The Language and style of the Qur’an
b.The Predictions of the Qur’an“

AlifLâmMîm.
The Romans have been defeated. In the nearer land (Syria, Iraq, Jordan, and Palestine), and they, after their defeat, will be victorious. Within three to nine years. The decision of the matter, before and after (these events) is only with Allâh, (before the defeat of Romans by the Persians, and after, i.e. the defeat of the Persians by the Romans). And on that Day, the believers (i.e. Muslims) will rejoice (at the victory given by Allâh to the Romans against the Persians), With the help of Allâh, He helps whom He wills, and He is the AllMighty, the Most Merciful.” The Noble Qur’an 30:1-5

c.The Stories in the Qur’an:-
The Qur’an mentions the stories of many Prophets and nations of old. The Prophet (peace be upon him) had no recourse to such information. He had lived amongst the Quraysh for 40 yrs, and during this time he had never studied under any Priest or monk, nor had he read any history. Yet, despite his illiteracy, all of a sudden, he started to inform his people of the histories of the previous nations, from the creation of the Heavens and the Earth, to the building of the Ka’bah by Ibraheem, from creation of the Adam to the flood of Noah, from splitting of the Nile by the Moosa to the virgin birth of Eesa, from the camel of Saalih to the whale of Younus-from where did he (peace be upon him) obtain this knowledge?

d. Beliefs and the laws ofQur’an:
The Qur’an was revealed as a guidance for mankind. The primary purpose of the Qur’an is to define the true set of beliefs (aqeedah) with regards to the Creator, and to implement these beliefs in a system of laws (Sha’reeah) that will benefit the creation in this life and the next.

e. Scientific Facts of the Qur’an

f. The Effect of Qur’an has on its listeners:
No person can remain unaffected after he has listened to the Qur’an.

g. The Easy by which the Qur’an memorized:
There is not a single practicing Muslim on the face of this earth except that he has memorized some portion of the Qur’an verbatim.

h. Lack of Contradictions
“Do they not then consider the Qur'ân carefully? Had it been from other than Allâh, they would surely have found therein much contradictions.” The Noble Qur’an 4:82.
Pray for me.
Regards, Naqeebullah khan..
