 Introduction
 Importance in light of the Quran
 Importance in the light of Hadiths
 Obligation of Jihad
 Blessings of Jihad
 Jihad, misunderstood as terrorism
 General importance of Jihad
 Conclusion
Meaning and etymology of word “Jihad”:
The word “Jihad” is an Arabic word which is derived from “Juhd” that means: Endeavour, Struggle, or Power. And in accordance with Islam, it means: To fight evil and wrong doings, thoughts, and approvals which cause aggression and that are against Islam and Muslims. Further introduction is given in preceding introductory paragraph.
Introduction:
According to the Holy Quran, we,Muslims, are told to fight merely for the cause of Allah Almighty, and the Quran mentions it in the following Style that:
“Fight for the cause of Allah against those who fight you, and do not begin aggression, for God loves not aggressor.”
From above verse, Jihad can be introduced to large extent. Moreover, it is also consensus remark of many religious scholars that Jihad means: Fight against unbeliever and against those who attack on Deen (Islam). Jihad is sole way to spread Islamic rule throughout the world; and to this end, Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W) and his companions made utmost possible efforts. As it is said for Jihad that it defends Islam and promotes it abroad. Within the boundaries of Islam, it has got such a high importance that it stands next to the five fundamental principles of Islam, such as: Touheed, Nimaz, Zakat, Roza, and Hajj. Having introduced it, I shall throw search light of The Quran on its importance.
Importance in light of the Quran:
The Holy Quran is laden with verses describing the importance of Jihad; and those all verses Muslim are repeatedly emphasized to fight for the cause and in the way of Allah Almighty. As The Quran reads:
“Fight in the way of Allah Almighty, and know that He is nearer and The Knower of everything.”
In addition to it, Allah Almighty announces retribution for those who do not partake in Jihad. The Holy mentions it as:
“…If you (Muslims) do not go forth for Jihad, He (Allah) will punish you severe punishment.”
Adding above, Allah Almighty says that those who martyred (Shaheed) are always alive. And The Quran mentions it in the preceding verse that:
“Do not say of those who laid down their lives for the Cause of Allah that they are dead; but in fact, they are living (in the Barzakh) although you do not understand it.”
It is said that those who died in the way of Allah get such a pleasure that even after death; they crave to go in the world to die again in the way of Allah Almighty. Besides, it is misunderstood by many Muslims that Jihad is not compulsory commandment of Allah Almighty. But to tell the truth, Allah has made it compulsory as He says in the Quran:
“Jihad has been made compulsory upon you (Muslims).”
Such types of many verses are there in the Quran which enforce Muslims to fight in the way of Allah against your visible enemy, against the Satan, and against your own self (Nafs) and get such a strong control over them that they could not tread you. And if you succeed in doing so, you will be admitted in the paradise, including Quranic verses, and it is also important and necessary to scrutinize the importance of Jihad in the light of Hadiths.
Importance in the light of Hadiths:
Prophet Mohammad (May Allah’s choicest blessings and peace be upon him) has also encouraged Muslims for Jihad and told them its ways of conducting. The following Hadith reveals encouragement, as:
“Whosoever died in such a state that neither he fought for Islam nor he wished to do so. Then his death will be like the death of Munafiq (disbeliever).”
In above Hadith, it is shown that every Muslim should make all possible efforts for uplift of Islam by their hands, or by their tongues, or at least by their heart (prayer). But if any Muslim makes none of afore-said efforts, his death approximate the death of disbeliever.
Besides above, he also told his companions that how to do Jihad? Whom you will have to kill? And what you will not be supposed to do? As,
“He (S.A.W) prohibited his companions strongly from killing women, children, elders, and from cutting palm-trees.” He further advised them, “Do not betray, do not be excessive, and do not kill new-born child.”
Likewise, he told his companions numerous rules and regulations of Jihad. Finally he (S.A.W) also told them, the reward and compensation of Jihad in Hadith below:
“Two kinds of eyes will be protected from hell-fire: The first one is that which weep from the fear of Allah Almighty, and the second one is that which guards in the way of Allah throughout the night.”
In above Hadith, the reward which is told for Jihad is unequalled and is unique in its sense. And now, let’s know that how it is obligatory upon Muslims?
Obligation of Jihad:
Allah Almighty says in The Quran:
“Fighting (Jihad) has been made compulsory you (Muslims).”
From The Holy Quran, it is crystal clear that Jihad is obligatory task. After coming into the fold of Islam, one will have to strive for uplift, promotion, and protection of Islam. And if any Muslim denies from doing so, Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W) said,” he will die as if he were disbeliever (munafiq).”; And he will not be admitted in paradise. Jihad for Muslims is like duty of father: as father is shouldered the responsibility of everything relevant of his off-spring. Similarly for Muslims, jihad is a duty that Muslims have to perform for protection and safety of Islam and its commandments. And now, let’s move towards the blessings of Jihad which will be bestowed on”Mujahids” as compensation.
Blessings of Jihad:
The first and the foremost blessing of Jihad was told by Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W) that, “Mujahids are forbidden upon hell-fire.” Furthermore, Allah says in The Quran that Mujahids who sacrifice their lives in the way of Allah are always living in the Barzakh, they never die, and their soul rests in eternal peace. Allah Almighty is so pleased with them that before falling a drop of blood of Mujahid on the earth, he is admitted in the paradise. In short, there are infinite blessings of Allah Almighty for Jihad that is done in His way. Apart from it, many people even Muslims think that jihad is not the commandment of Allah, but it is the way of spreading terrorism. Let’s have a brief description of above perspective.
Jihad, misunderstood as terrorism:
The term “Terrorism” cannot be found anywhere in the Quran and the Hadiths. The foregoing misunderstanding is partly due to lack of Quranic knowledge and the knowledge of Hadiths, and partly due to rude behavior of Muslims. The fighting for one’s own self cannot be considered as Jihad, but Jihad is fighting which is made for the cause of Allah regardless of worldly desires. More importantly, the concept of distinction should be made clear that Jihad is Islamic commandment and it does not follow worldly desires, whereas Terrorism is not an Islamic commandment, and it, obviously, follows the worldly desires. By this way afore-said “misunderstood” can be turned to “understood”. Adding above all, it is also crucial to know the general importance of afore-mentioned commandment.
General importance of Jihad:
Generally, Jihad has got sky-rocketing importance. And for Jihad, we are told that, “do not fight against your Muslim brothers, Muslim countries, and even against non-muslims, and non-muslim countries who harbor no aggression against you, your treaties, and Islam.” It means, Jihad can never be considered as terrorism; rather Islam prohibits Muslims from killing innocents, whether they are Muslims or non-muslims. Jihad does not mean: to kill everyone who are non-muslims. But in fact, it means: to fight and kill only those non-muslims who draw aggressive designs and attack on Deen (Islam). And on the other hand, there is no mention of Jihad in most of the religions of the world. And only on account of this, the followers of those religions fear from death. But in Christianity, there is somewhat concept of fighting. As Jesus Christ said to his people:
“But now, if you have purse or bag, take it out; And if you do not have sword, sell your cloak and buy one.”
Also in Christianity, emphasis on Jihad is less strong. And now, let’s have a glimpse at gist of above-mentioned perspectives.
Conclusion:
From the upshots of above discussion, it is concluded that: Jihad means: to fight in the way of Allah regardless of worldly desires, and in both, The Quran, and the Hadith. Muslims are repeatedly emphasized for Jihad describing that it (Jihad) is obligatory upon every Muslim. So it is incumbent upon every Muslim to partake in it.

Dear Zohaib,

You started your essay introduction with two excellent sentences but thereafter you have slipped away. As you yourself defined, "Jihad" is the name of every struggle (whether physical or mental) against evil. But your mistake is that you have sticked to the single aspect of physical jihad (fight against non-believers) even in your introductory statements and quotations. It may be better that you first quote those sayings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) or verses from the Holy Quran which define "Jihad" and than only you should define each aspect of Jihad separately. Please note that I didn't read all of your passage after coming to know that you have straight away come to the usual definition of Jihad (meaning fight against the non-believers).
