according to my observation Pakistan is collection of communities, reason is that if we think about a nation they have some common predefined goals and their efforts are in same directions. the new governments will continue previously government's projects but in Pakistan we have no common goal, every government have their own policies and projects. when we talk about Islamic or religious state, we must analyse that whether the government has laid down the law which Islam has prescribed in Quran and Sunnah?
definitely you will come to know that we are not living in an Islamic state. Muslim doesn't mean that we have Islamic name, Muslim is one who follow 5 fundamentals of Islam. My opinion is not last but least.

Yes Pakistan is a collection of communities. It is not a nation. In Pakistan you will find Punjabi, Sindhi, Pathan, Balochi, and many many more ethnic groups. Each group has its own interests and values. So Pakistan can not termed as Nation. On the other hand Nation is refered as a community of people who share a common territory and government; and who often share a common language, race, descent, and history, such as the “Palestinian nation.”

@sabahat
as u have given three option and to chose any i chose two option
nation and community
nation becz when we move to any other country for any work we r call there as pakistani which show our nationality but this is also reaility that we r not taking pakistan our nation and not fulfil our responsibilty as a nation but we r said to be a nation
community becz we people of different religions, culture, casts etc r living together either nicely or not nicely as a human bieng or as a animal but living together so we r community
islamic polity not. as our rule of country, our living style going. so at some extent i think it is nonislamic state. but in this country i think we r free to perform our abads.

To be or not to be :)

"A nation is a grouping of people who share real or imagined common history, culture, language or ethnic origin, often possessing or seeking its own government".

"A part, or division, of the people of the earth, distinguished from the rest by common descent, language, or institutions; a race; a stock"

And so on and on, but what all these definitions are trying to covey this, that, people who are alike in there history, culture or language are considered to be a nation.
There are counter definitions too, in which emphasis is on that, inhabitants of same land with keeping difference in there language, history and culture but governed by a same system are considered as nation.America is one of its example.
But when similarities are weak then differences then it will not be considered as a nation, and so the case of Pakistan is.
We are groups of people with different approaches our interests.
The only similarity is religion but it also subdivided in sects which creates a difference, then language , norms and culture history.
So all these things which exist here are trying to say that we are groups of people with differences but live and governed by same state and fallow the same rule of state.
So on one hand we are a nation and other hand we are not a nation.

@very special 1, brother I appreciate your effort, remember when we go to a discussion the first thing comes to mind is definitions regarding topic being discussed. as you mentioned that Pakistan is not an Islamic state it is why because we are Muslim by definition but practically we are not. So, it shows two things, 1: by definition 2: practicality. if any one of these is missing means there is imperfection. so, to be perfect or actual both are compulsory. if we are nation then we should go to its definition but unfortunately we do not following neither definition nor practical aspect. you are right we are known as Pakistani in abroad. It doesn't mean we are a nation, being a Pakistani is our geographical representation. for example I am basically an Arabic but living in Punjab thats why I am called Punjabi. it doesn't mean I am Punjabi basically.

@venom, I partially agree with you but according to new researches there are just two options, Yes/Not. nothing between these two. but your opinion is genuine. in Pakistan it is valid.

1) if you write in PA collection of communities you will get a big ZERO
2) Nation (is the right answer for PA in my point of view)
3) and i don't agree with the concept of Islamic polity

Pakistan is a collection of communities or a nation?

Pakistan is a state where different communities are gathered under single ideology which binds them in the form of a nation. So far islamic polity is concerned, it should be kept in mind that this is mere a misconception because in this land accordind to the constitution of pakistan all minorities have freedom of exercising their religion with equal rights as those to the muslim dwellers of the land.

As far as if we talk about P.Affairs this is a diverse view, and not related to subject, but if we could talk clearly as in informal way, first of all i think country and religion is two different things and we could consider pakistan as collection of different ethinic groups, those will make a community at large, however if we take a bookish diffenation of the word "Nation" it has diverse, according to subjects it has diverse point of view. but a most common defination that a nation could have common goals, dont take in political way everything is not a politics, so i suggest that every country has a common goals, at international level, (such as building economy and strong national image) either we are going in right direction or not that is another perspective. as a collection of different commnties, many states have emerge such as America. so why couldnt PAKISTAN...... but
everyone has their own mind set. i dint think it is subject related topic to the pakistan affairs......
