Default Pakistan and balkan conflict-relationship?

I am reading "pakistan: A modern history" by Ian Talbot

I read these sentences but could not understand the meaning. If anyone knows please guide me.

"In Europe the euphoria engendered by the fall of berlin wall turned into disillusionment in the bloody Balkan conflict. Pakistan's hopes dissolved into chaos of post-communist Afghanistan and in the intensification of cold war with india"

if anyone understands this, guide me please.

Germany was divided in two halves after world war 2, one of which was under western influence and the other one was under Soviet Union. The fall of Berlin wall i.e. re-unification of Germany (1989-90) must have been perceived by the west as a news that Russia had lost influence over Europe. To their disappointment, Russia exercised its influence in Yugoslav wars (or Balkan wars of 90's).
Pakistan, on the other hand, hoped to achieve friendly relations with a peaceful Afghanistan to get what is often called "strategic depth" in the country by driving Russian forces out of it (in cooperation with USA). Pakistan also got engaged in a serious nuclear arms race with India in 1990s (both countries declared themselves nuclear in 1998, Pakistan following India). The author is calling it cold war with India.

That is what I was able to guess from these two lines. I hope it helps.
