Q7 answer
Pakistan has an estimated annual milk production of 34 million tonnes. While this is only a third of India’s milk production (world's largest), Pakistan’s population is less than 1/6 the size of India’s! Pakistan has seen a steep rise in milk production over the past few years as many large dairy farms have been established. The problem not only is that people do not get adequate quantity of milk as part of their diet but also that when they do, it is not pure. The mixing of water in milk is a thing of the past now. These days most suppliers are only mixing little milk (I hope they do mix some) in whiteners and other chemicals (horrible stuff I know). People who are aware of this problem are having to resort to packaged milk, producers of which claim it preserves all the nutrients of fresh milk (and I fail to understand how). Their has to be some difference between a product (milk) that expires within a day or two even when refrigerated and its alternative product (packaged milk) that can stay stable for months without refrigerators. Even the milk producers have to advertise on their packaging that their milk only contains 3.5% fat whereas dairy milk actually has 30-40% of fat in it. The root cause is simple and very unfortunate one. People here in our country have this tendency of being dishonest in their dealings (lets pray this problem goes away soon). If can come up with a good system of checks and balances (current ones have failed miserably) we can cope with this crisis and people of out country can stop being under-fed/mal-nutritioned (most children and women of Pakistan are going through serious deficiency of Iron and milk alone is a very good source of Iron). (A part of the question still remains unanswered. Where does all the real milk go? :/ . Anyone?) |

Cow maintained on good ration have round about 3.4 % of Fat and Buffalo has Maximum 6 percent... Secondly milk is mostly wasted and spoiled before reaching to our houses...Nestle and Engro are exporting Milk By-products as well. Thirdly Pakistan is 4th largest country...Believe me if we provide our animals good ration,do selective breeding and proper housing, Pakistan can stand on top and it's not an uphill task just our farmer needs to be educated and actually tamed...It's a problem in our country that the most Jahil person behaves like "Aristotle" of his time... Fourthly Corporate Sector have jumped in Dairy Farming since 2006 and uptil now round about 50,000 Friesians have been imported secretly by big corporate groups...Local Farmer who thinks his self made medication and contemporary way of farming will bore him fruits...He is stupid still...Average Production of Friesian in Pakistan is 36 Litres (Maximum 60 litres recorded) in the 3rd Lactation with less expense on diet as compared to local animals...Israel presently have 40 litres of average with 900 corporate dairy farms...Soon Corporate industry will take over the local market...Pakistan is on the verge of White Revolution for White Collared people...

@ Rao Rameez
Thank you for the correction. My bad, the fat percentage in whole milk is 3-4% (in most breeds). (Consider going through this PDF on nutrition value of different dairy products http://www.milk.co.uk/resources/reso...tResourceID=55) However it is true that nutrition value of pasteurized or processed milk does not stay the same as raw milk’s. And yes Friesians have been imported here by corporations but problem with them is that they are too expensive for small farmers. It is very hard and costly to house them since they have little chance of survival in the climate offered by the sub-continent (Holstein Friesian is a Dutch-German breed which is currently employed in a number of countries, mostly with cool temperatures, for the production of dairy/beef). While it is very well the third lactation period that yields higher quantity of milk in Friesians (as mentioned by Rao Rameez), there are two more factors that affect the milk yield. The season of calving is important as cows calved in autumn and winter show good performance (because of the temperatures and the stocks of fodder collected from the outgoing summer). Secondly milk yield in imported cows (cows calved in cooler temperatures) is higher than the cows calved in farms. “Aristotles” of our country need to be taught these things. :P I agree with Rao Rameez that if we put our effort in the right direction we can easily cater to the local supply and earn revenues from exports of dairy products (countries such as Malaysia and even China etc. badly need supplies of dairy products and meat and we can take advantage of the opportunity). Being fourth largest even after such negligence is a blessing (seriously). I would rather recommend controlled natural selection of imported cows (perhaps in combination with local cows too?) since total artificial selection might not allow cows with better chance of survival in hot temperatures to produce further. It is more important to keep expensive cattle alive for Pakistani farmer at the moment than to get maximum possible yields (since we are not low on supplies). A right balance between milk yield and animal survival can work wonders for Pakistan. Thank you. |

The question should be about interior policies of Pakistan as she had a history of poor interior policy, which failed to spread harmony among state institutions and caused irreparable damage to them. But if we talk about Pakistan's foreign policy, history witnessed that country had a balanced policy and enjoyed( and is still enjoying) friendly relations with many countries. Because of successful foreign policy Pakistan manged to get recognition as an independent nation at global level soon after its inception and was invited to join many international treaties. Pakistan's inclination towards USA was justifiable because it was the requirement of the time to have a strong ally. On the other hand, policy had major flaws as well. Pakistan mishandled the kashmir issue and then willingly supported anti-USSR group during Afghan war and fall of Bangladesh is another example, these issues raised serious concerns over country's foreign policy. Post 9/11 scenario, witnessed drastic changes in foreign policy of many countries worldwide. But I haven't seen major changes in Pakistan's policy,as it still revolves around USA and still we have strained relations with India and Afghanistan.

On the other hand, definitely, Pakistan's getting allied to USA proved a lot fruitful for Pakistan. The military and economic assistance provided by US enabled Pakistan to develop at an exponential rate. Moreover, Pakistan also kept low-level economic ties with Russia which installed several major industries in Pakistan. So the remarkable diplomacy by Pakistan helped it in developing and defending itself from the lethal forces that resided right beside it. Today Pakistan is much more independent and self-sufficient as compared to that time. Pakistan has complete freedom to structure its foreign policy by its needs and interests. As the foreign policy of most of the countries revolves around the nexus of power, this Multi-polar world offers numerous opportunities. USA, with its pivot policy, is emphasising over the Asia-Pacific to prevent China from becoming what USA does not want it to become. However, China, with its String of Pearls, is continuously conquering major areas of interests for big powers. While both of these Big powers are burning their fuel, Russia is reviving, allying with the countries that were a part of the USSR, and somehow pushed western Europe to be dependent on Russia due to energy supplies. In such a state Pakistan should revisit its foreign policy and consider its interests and needs before being allied blindly with anyone. A pluralistic and unbiased foreign policy would enable Pakistan to have economic ties with whomsoever it needed, and hence its Economic and energy crisis might resolve. |
