My subject combination/advice
So this will be my first attempt at the CSS exam, I have flirted with the idea of appearing in the previous couple of years but didn't (did not prepare as well).
But this year I have finally decided to go for it. I have a degree in Communication Studies from Punjab University and I have always been very fond of reading books/newspapers and I have been working as a journalist/anchor for the last 2.5 years (started my professional career after completing my education). I have opted for the following subjects: 1. International Relations (200) 2. International Law (100) 3. Public Administration (100) 4. History of Pakistan and India (100) 5. Mass Communication I was always going to go with International Relations as I believe I already have a fairly decent understanding of the subject. So I also decided to opt International Law as having two more or less related subjects is going to help as some topics might overlap or result in better understanding. (I considered the idea of going for Criminology as it appeared very interesting but I think I.Law would be the safe bet). As far as Public Administration is concerned I did went over its syllabus and books last year and it looked a fairly straight forward subject. Although in this case too I was thinking of opting Gender Studies (put off by the low score of candidates last year) and Environmental Sciences but in the end have decided for Public Ad. Choosing History of India and Pakistan was pretty straightforward as I already have good grip over the subject (without touching any book for now) and it will also assist in my compulsory subject i.e. Pakistan Affairs. However I have seen most people suggest US History instead of Indo-Pak, I have a fairly decent grip of US History too, so if it's certain that Indo-Pak history won't get good score even if you good grip on the subject in that case I'll have to opt US History. Finally Mass Communication because I am a Communication Studies grad and have been working in the media industry for 2.5 years now. As far as preparation goes, I already have the books for most subjects and have a fairly decent idea of all subjects. I am certain that most people would consider me a bit non-serious as there isn't much time left but I believe 3.5/4 months is adequate time for preparation. I will probably get in full exams mode by mid-November. I have also decided to keep English Precis and Essay aside till mid January. I think I have a decent enough expression that will be of some help in the Essay and my grammar isn't that bad either. A week for both subjects near the exams will give me a decent enough shot at clearing. (I believe that as far as English goes luck is a major factor) The purpose of posting this was to seek advice/suggestions from those who have already attempted the exam or those who are appearing for the first time but have common subjects. Any tips/suggestions/advice more than welcome. |

I am surprised you are leaving both English subjects till the last month. Why not just keep working on it a little bit at regular intervals?
Unless you are already writing like Bertrand Russell or Bernard Shaw, you need to start working on Essay immediately. Precis is doable in the last month if your English is already good, but essay, I don't think so. Also don't forget that whatever work you do for English subjects, it is going to help you in the other subjects as well. Good Luck! |

I won't leave English altogether till the very end but won't dedicate as much time to English as to the other subjects. (My observation is that the luck factor in clearing the English exam is very high, and the marking seems rather erratic).
Very kind of you to respond with some advice, thank you. |
