Customs v/s Ex-PCS
My Dear Colleagues,
I have been allocated to CEG in CSS 2008. I was first appointed as Tehsildar/Mukhtiarkar(Revenue) in the provincial revenue department through PCS; and subsequetly promoted to DDO (Revenue) in March 2008. I am now therefore in Executive PCS Cadre informally called the provincial DMG. Keeping in view the nuisance created by the Nazims and the local governance issues experienced in the past with heavy political involvement, Customs seems to be far better option for me. Nevertheless I would like to have sagacious opinion of my experienced colleagues about joining CEG in a situation when the revival of executive magistracy seems to be inevitable for the Government. There have been clear statements by the P.M. that the old magistracy system would be restored. In such a situation the Ex-PCS service would come out to be more stroger, competitive and attractive. Dear Amjad,
U should opt for CUSTOMS for it may take 7 to 9 years to get promotion in EX PCS,moreover it is improbable that old magistracy system ll be revived in letter and spirit. Judiciary too is resisting that move.We were appointed SECTION OFFICER in JAN,2005 through PCS and presently our post is being upgraded to BS_18 with nomenclature ASSISTANT SECRTETARY(I m in PSP bt even i were in CUSTOM i had opted for it too, because of the matchless mobility and charm for CSPS. Agree PCS is far superior to PSS cadre but even then u mAY go for three years lien period. If at any time u r feedup of CUSTOMS u may go for EX PCS. Dear Amjad
First of all congratulations on ur success.. Choice of career should be your own decision, in first place, which should be how you wants to see yourself in future... Presently U r in Ex-PCS which is virtual DMG in every sense.. U r in line 2 b Senior member (B-20).. Issue of restoration of executive magistracy is still in limbo, particularly in Sindh, where MQM will oppose it tooth & nail...... Against this background, CEG seems to b enticing.. After passing written portion of CSS, I met few BS-20/21/22 DMG officers, all were of opinion that CSG should b kept as 1st preference... CEG may loose its charm due to infighting in FBR.. Income tax is trying really hard to re-gain sales tax, & income tax officers r really trying their level best to end stronghold of CEG on promotions in FBR... if ITG succeeds than CEG will not b charming anymore.. My advice is to join CEG n retain lien: complete training n see whats happens inside FBR and what happens on the front of Executive magistracy. Regards

come to customs
no matter how good the PCS cadre becomes it wil never be as good as the CSS cadres. anything in CSS is better than anything that the PCS has to offer. and Customs is such a nice group. I got into accidentally, but now looking at it, i think i am in a much better position than most people.
A few days ago i was talking to a senior DMG officer, the topper of his batch. and he said to me that if he were given a chance again, he will opt for customs. they dont call it the "royal job" for nothing.

Bro, I beg to differ here, In Sindh, Ex-PCS gives very tough time to DMG... Groups like ITG, Information, Railways, Commerce & Trade, OMG, Military lands, Postal r virtually no match for Ex-PCS group.. Even CEG would pale if it is compared with Ex-PCS.. Ex-PCS people r virtually going everywhere.. They can b posted as Additional secretaries (B-21) in any Federal Ministry as Federal Secretariat contains two BS-21 posts for provincial services. they can become secretaies DCOs in provinces...... they can go on foreign postings as consulate General in foreign missions (Few of Ex-PCS Officers from Sindh r in foreign Missions at present0 However Choice is yours, Dear Amjad REGARDS

I support the line adopted by Shabeer Sethar. He is right about the slow promotions.
You are lucky that you've been promoted from BPS 16 to BPS 17 within 5 years. You owe it to the devolution plan. When it reverts, each promotion might take you as long as 12-20 years. DMG will hopefully get stronger in Sindh and EX-PCS will lose its present charming position. CEG is a service worth it. No-one normally doubts the competence of a CSS officer. Look at the tag. Regards,

i and shabbir both have been allocated into psp by choice. we had this news about possible reversal of devolution plan in mind when we were writing the preference form. but still we have chosen psp. it's not possible for me to give you a judgment on which group is better. there are plus/minus of both groups. psp fulfilled my requirement (one reason: we didn't need a DMG because we already have a ex-pcs officer in my family) so i just went for it. when it comes to these two groups, it's about choices. let's see what shabbir has to say. regards,
