Question of Precis, Expansion and Comprehension of CE-2011
 

Deal All, I am not very comfortable about my paper of english preci and composition (CE-2011) which is one of the critical subject. The reason is that i was left with 30 minutes only when i had to attempt the preci. Given the importance of this question, U know that most of the candidates take almost one hour to attemt this question.Though i completed the preci but due to shortage of time i could not even check the quality and size of the preci which now makes me a little uncomfortable. I request comments from all on how much marks one normally gets in the following three questions.
1. The preci of 25 marks
2. Idea Expansion of 20 marks
3. Comprehension of 20 marks.

I have made a good attempt of idea expansion and comprehension. Please give you ideas on the average marks one should get in above three question so that i might know my position. Those who have got their marks in this paper in earlier examinations are particularly requested to express their ideas.

Dear brother i have read your post and i can understand your anxiety. i also appeared in CSS-2011 exam and i can say with full conviction that it was my first brush with realism. If you attempted the Precis then it is alright. Marks are awarded on the basis of quality and accuracy.in CSS exam no one can achieve perfection. there is always room for improvement. I think that like myself you are also worried about the "improvement". Candidates after a revisit to their CSS attempt always feel discontented and they look for ways which could have brought more improvement in their work albeit after taking the exam. i am also worried about my essay as you are worried about your precis.

If we go by the trend of CSS-2010 exam then it is safe to assume that a well attempted precis,comprehension and short essay can fetch 15 marks.

Rest depends on the marking trend whether it is lenient or strict. keep your fingers crossed until the result is declared. hopefully it will turn out much better than your expectations.

Infact when i came out og the exmination hall after attempting the paper of preci and composition i was completely contented about this paper. latter on when i learned that preci is the most critical question of this paper and due to poor time management i had substantially compromised with the quality of the very question it started creating anxeity and the more i started exploring this paper the more i became obsessed. i would share with you the reasons which caused me to be obsessed so that you may add your ideas on them.Like I learned from somewhere that the question of preci holds such paramount importance in this paper that if somebody does not attempt this question at all, then strong chances are there thay he would fail in this paper no matter how good he has attempted the rest of the paper. Secondly some teachers in academies in Islamabad told me that students on the average score 6-8 marks in idea expansion, preci and comprehensions which aggravated my concerns about this paper and this caused me to compute my own marks on this papers. Thirdly I also learned that FPSC decides a paper every year as a secreening paper wherein the marking is made tough and its the preci and composition which is the secreening paper for CSS 2011. I dont know how much reliable these comments should be. So fingures crossed and praying from AlMIGHTY ALLAH to see everything in favor. AMEEN. You are however requested to share your opinion over my concerns. The seniors are also requested to share their ideas. and sikandar what makes you worried about your essay? I believe what you have written about your performance does speaks loudly that you are worried about "improvement". Dear brother CSS is an exam in which what you can deliver best in examination environment matters most. After coming out of the examination hall your nerves are much relieved. i think that you are aiming for perfection. I daresay that you are feeling anxious because result has not been declared and you are overly obsessed. There is no need to worry.

I don't see eye to eye with you in this matter. even if you have not attempted the precis well doesn't mean that the examiner will decide your essay solely on this basis.

Again i will say that marking trend keeps changing every year. in CSS-2010 highest marks in English Precis were 92. i guess that in CSS-2010 average marks in precis were at least 15. so, you can offer many teachers proof that precis can accrue more than 15 marks. Moreover, marks always depend on quality work.if you produce quality work then you will certainly work wonders.


Hmm..i am not obsessed with my essay. i am anxious because i am also worried about the "improvement" area. i wish i had done better. nevertheless my essay fell short of my expectations. I am also waiting for the result and i am very hopeful.i wish you,myself and every member of the forum a very good luck.

Dear Sikandar, is there any connection between English and essay papers?in other words, does poor performance in English affect result of essay?

How do you know average score of precis last year was 15? Is it separately mentioned on transcript? And is it necessary to pass the precis section or aggregate score is counted of english paper 2?

If you are referring to Precis & composition paper, there is no such connection between Essay and Precis paper. If this had been true, a candidate scoring 93 in precis & composition paper would also have secured high marks in Essay(But he failed in Essay with 17 marks).

I will second the opinion of Sir Usman Khalid.
There is no correlation between Essay and Precis Paper. You have to pass both papers individually and performance in one does not guarantee same result in the second paper.

I stated a safe guess because last year candidates got very high marks in Precis paper. Highest marks in Precis paper were 93-you guessed it right FPSC can make marking elastic at any time.

So, in view of the high scoring trend it is safe to assume that average marks in precis in CSS-2010 ought to have been 15/25.
Essay 40/100 is must.
Precis 40/100 is must.

You need to pass both papers individually.
