social media means , that medium which connects society with each other like email,tv,facebook,newspaper,gernals,mobile ,radio and etc.

not only social media every thing of this universe has both merits and demerits so social media as well .

merits of social ,

1.keep update with society
2.keep close to distant persons
3.acquaint with advance knowledge
4.connect with mentors
5.save time in many ways

Demerits

1.Wasting time on useless material.
2.Provoke immature persons.
3.Some time predict wrong information as in case of Tehrik Insaf so untrustiness.
4.Make people freak like addiction,in case they would not use they will not feel good.
5.No restriction any thing can be posted .


there are alot of other merits and demerits you can search on net but what came in my mind i am sharing with you .

Merits:
- More Informed young generation
-Direct or indirect contact with loved ones
-Authentic News stories
-Promoting democratic culture in our society
-Raising voice against every Injustice
-Leaders are feeling answerable before masses for their actions.
-Cheap source of entertainment
-World has really become a "Global Village"

Demerits:
-Wrong use of social media to exploit the image of opponents
-obnoxious material and pages of Facebook

-According to the latest research, "Social Media has become more dangerous than Coffee and Tobacco"because its users cannot leave it easily.
-Wastage of time and money
-Decline of the culture of book reading
-Increasing generation gap
-No regulatory authority to check the contents of social media
-Increasing incidents of Kidnapping

Media has more blessing as compare to banefull or more advantages as compare to disadvantages;just take a simple example previous generation had no awareness or few year back public less aware about culture,democracy,facebook, etc... Now everyone have more information about foreign culture and about Pakistan.But in so many cases media have a wrongdoings also like they influence sensationalism on terrorism and other issues which effect on investment.

Another disadvantage is that it could become an isolating influence on an individual - either the skills to develop relationships will not fully develop or they will decay from lack of use.
