Mysticism is a very misleading term.If you are talking about Tsawwuf,we can trace its history since era of Prophet PBUH when he PBUH taught the AshaB e Suffa and lit the fire of Ishq e Alehi in their hearts.Tsawwuf is the base of Islam. Its love of God.Mysticism is something else.If we look carefully at the history of Islam, thre is no mysticism at all.

As written in Kashf-ul-Mahjoob...Ashaab-e-Suffa were the first ones..

Among the very first books on Tasawwuf (Pure on Tasawwuf):-
1. "Kitab-ul-Murideen" by Sheikh Yahya bin Moaz Razi
2. "Kitab ar Reyayatul Haqooq by Sheikh Haris Muhasbi (Died 273 A.H) Very Difficult to find these...May be present with rare Sheikhs in Oman and Yemen...

Most reliable and old book is
"Kitab-ul-Lama" by Sheikh Abu-Nasar Abdullah bin Ali Siraj Tusi...It has also written in English with "Foreward" of Prof. Nicolsan..May be with these accounts you can find the origins...

One More Famous Book which is also too contemporary and best to my point of view to know "Tasawwuf" and it's origin is "Quwat-ul-Qaloob" by Sheikh Abu Talib Makki (386 A.H)
Imam Ghazali have praised about Abu Talib Makki as well in one of his books and is easily available from any Maktab..

Arrow There is no Mysticism in Islam

After lot of reading on this topic i conclude a simple solution that there is not any mystic part in Islam. That why it is called siraat e mustaqeem(Straight Path) and valid till the Armageddon. If it is mystic than how can Allah make a hidden or vogue version of his saying valid till Armageddon.

Any way Some orientalist and researcher consider the Holy Journey Of Prophet(PBUH) (MIRAAJ) as the mystic and start of the mysticism in in Islam from that Journey.

Exclude mysticism from Islam and you end up like JJ. Or you will be found lynching some Christian couples.
Shariah Batna is necessity in present era. Without knowing the essence of religion, you can't understand which thing to follow and how? With dozens of sects and sub sects of Islam, to choose which is the right way, you will have to follow this.
Very first word of Quran "Alif Laam Meem" and their meanings unknown are clear indication that there are certain hidden things as well.
There was a difference between knowledge of Moses A.S and knowledge of Khizer A.S.
There was a difference between the knowledge of Uthman R.A and Awais Qarni R.A...But they were secure as they had seen the Prophet PBUH directly (or indirectly)and he was their direct mentor in both terms. One depicting the one form more (apparently) and second the other form.(Actually they were one)
We are so ungrateful that in Pakistan we are Muslims due to these mystical people but some non-confirmists have reached the height of thanklessness in this regard.
