Factors affecting perception:
At the moment i can just recall these factors. Factors and determinants of perception are almost the same.

Internal and external Factors
past experiences and learning and motives affect an individual’s perceptual process
Sensory Limits
Psychological factors such as personality,Situation, Moods and attitude, Physical factors can also affect perceptual process

Determinants of perception are basically divided into two categories:
1. Structural
2. Behavioral

Structural determinants refer to those qualities that stem from the stimulus itself such as its size, shape, color, amount, intensity, continuity, distance, depth etc.

Behavioral determinants refer to attention, past experiences, needs, values, learning of a person

Besides these two basic categories another important determinant of perception is stimulus organization, that is, object arrangement. Perceptual organization is governed by the Gestalt laws of organization: Proximity, Similarity, Closure and Continuity.

I wanted to know in detail because answer of the question needs much more. I am quite familiar with the Gestalt laws of organization, top down and bottom up process but are they sound relevant to the question of determinants of perception?

But the division of structural and behavioral determinants are completely relevant to the question. Thanks over all for your kind info.

The Gestalt laws are definitely relevant as perception is basically how we make sense of information that we receive through the sense organs of the body and obviously, the way objects are organized will have an effect on our perception.

I’m doubtful about the relevancy of the top-down and bottom-up processing theories though, because they’re pretty much an explanation for the “HOW” of the perception process, rather than what determines the way we perceive objects.

Same difference as what something is made up of and how it works does that make sense?

IS there any good reference to study the determinants of perception. I want to read extensively about the determinants of perception.

Many things are still unclear therefore one needs to study the book or any other good reference,

Apart from this I always wonder about the Committee who sets the paper. This question is very frequently asked and a very complex however looks very simple in its outlook. I think committee has not found a good amount of answers among the students therefore they repeatedly asked it for several times in a same fashion without any invention in the question topic.

Well, in my opinion, the determinants or factors of perception, in all their entirety, can be classified in 2 broader terms

1- Primary determinants: These are simply the gestalt laws of perceptual organization. The governing factors in this case are Law of Figure and Ground and Law of Pragnanz(simplicity). The law of Pragnanz can be further divided into other laws like symmetry, closure and similarity etc.

2- Secondary determinants: These are further classified as

a- Subjective factors: How one's personality attributes contribute to perception formation. For example, Motivation, Attitude, Emotions, Perceptual set, personality etc

b- Objective factors: How the traits of the thing/stimulus being perceived contribute to perception formation. for example, shape, size, contrast, colour, motion etc which are all the characteristics of the object/stimulus

c- Socio-cultural factors: How one's society shapes one's perception. For example the cultural norms, laws, moral bindings etc.
