Default Optional Subjects Chartered Accountants feel comfortable with?

I am a Chartered Accountant aspiring to sit the CSS exam in 2019. Naturally, having specialist knowledge in the Accounting department I am inclined to choose the Accounts and Auditing subject as my main 200 mark one.

My questions is, what other subjects do CA's normally feel easy choosing? Currently I've decided on Business Admin, Intl Law, US History, Gender Studies as the additional ones. However I'm still sat on the edge between Intl Law or Mercantile Law as I've sat an exam on Mercantile Law during my ACA and thus have some basic knowledge around it.

Lastly, does anyone know of examples in the past where CA's have qualified as CSPs?

First things first, bro, no doubt qualifying CA is a big achievement; hatsoff for this achievement of yours.
Now coming to the point.

Remember following points when choosing subjects.

Accounts is not just accounting but it is composite of financial and costing accounting in Accounting I paper and audit, taxation and business finance in accounting II paper. Being CA it would be really easy for you to prepare this paper without taking much stress.
Mercantile law is also suitable option for you bcz you have already studied it. But remember m.law also include other laws i-e company law, competition and 3 more. From which 1 question is examined in every paper. As you have already studied it it will not get much of your time.

Further bus. Ad is very promising for you bcz almost 70-80% of its course is reminiscent to your modcule E business management.

Gender studies is also a good choice and very scoring in last 2 attempts... course is a bit indigestable at first bcz of being finance guy but one can get over with it.
Last, chose subject that is more general and overlap with other subject. Journalism may also b considered...

Hope that helps...

Many thanks Asif for your insightful reply, much appreciated. It gives me some comfort that others like yourself who are CAs have opted for subjects aligned to their qualifications.

Having seen your other posts, your DMC demonstrates you secured solid marks in all subjects. Had it not been for English, you would have crossed the line! Would you mind please elaborating on your strategy for your optional subjects i.e how you prepared for them, what books you used and how much time it roughly took you?

In last attempt, I started from zero and it took main approx 5 months foolproof serious study as whole. I had given wee time to accounts because of the backgroud ofcourse. I just solved few past papers in last days. Besides, business ad had also taken less time comparatively.
Prime focus was on other nonfamiliar subjects. Current affairs, essay can primarily be prepared from readings; in which JWT magezine is of prime importance. For rest of subjects i followed css specific books of renowned authers. These are enlisted

Essay ... readings JWT, news papers etc n practice
GSA ... mian shafiq
Islamic studies.. karim dad
English... wren n martin
Pak affair... from notes
Current affairs... JWT mag
Accounts .. no any book
Business ad. JWT series book
Gender studies ... JWT book... but i will not recomment it bcz it was not that fruitful. There are other better books available in market.
Journalism... mostly from internet and some of it from a random book.. don't remember its author.
Mercantile law..
business law by khalid cheema (for contract act, neg instmnts, partnership)
Mercantile by advance publisher for remaining laws i-e company, competition act, others..

Hope that helps...

Hey, Im pretty much following the same advice Asif gave above. Least emphasis on Accounts Auditing and the Business admin paper for now. Working with a teacher for English though.

Default Acca

Hi dear CSS aspirants, I am also an ACCA member and I am going to sit in 2019 attempt, my optional subjects are:
Accounting and auditing
Business Administration
Mercantile Law
Mass Comm and Journalism
Environmental Law

I am not much worried about Accounts and will prepare it at the last time, but when i look at the syllabus of Business Administration it seems lengthy one, so what is your strategy to prepare this very subject?

This is my personal opinion, CSS is a gamble. Yes people may argue that no doubt with utmost hard work , you will achieve anything. But CSS is not as black and white, luck plays a massive part. Thus, I would advise you to complete your CA so you have something to fall onto in the unfortunate circumstance you do not clear the CSS exams. Furthermore, your CA knowledge will help you immensely in the Accounting and auditing (200 marks), Business Admin (100 marks) and maybe Mercantile law (100 mark) exams!
