Economics basic resources

Hello!

Here are a few resources that I hope you find useful. I shall be talking with respect to the CSS economics paper but this is a general guide as well.

To start off if you have very little economics background before this, I would insist that one builds up some basic concepts by watching a Youtube channel called Crash course. They have a wonderful playlist dedicated to economics which covers most everything you need to know.

The CSS Economics papers can be divided into two halves; theoretical and applicable to Pakistan. In the first portion all theoretical aspects of the subject including all laws, graphs, equations and concepts need to be on your fingertips. In the second half you take everything you've learned theoretically and apply it to Pakistan and more generally to the world economic problems-both contemporary and historical.

The Crash Course videos cover a good deal of the first half. For a more in depth study into the same part I would recommend books written by Professer M. Saeed Nasir especially those recommended for Bachelors students as its basic enough for a newbie but thorough enough to get you good marks. For the second half a book titled Macro economics & Economic development in Pakistan by Prof. M. Saeed Nasir is fairly thorough.

Another excellent advice would be to constantly read up articles in leading newspapers on modern economic issues related to Pakistan and the world at large. This is also helpful for essay preparation as one or two related topics are usually given as well.

Feel free to ask any questions if you want. I'd be happy to help.

Hi everyone this is my first post here, hope everyone is doing great!

I have studied Economics as subject in CA and I'm well familiar with all the terminologies and majority of concepts.
I'm personally more interested in international relations but there is fierce competition as everyone is opting for it, however I have decided to opt for Economics, let see how this gamble turns out for me.

I have background in economics and I'm well versed with all syllabus content of IR due to my interest in current affairs.
Seniors are hereby, requested to advise which subject is recommended given the fact that I'm planning for 2020 and merely 6 months are left by now.

Economics is a very practical subject. It might not seem that way in the beginning since they bombard you with lots of theory. But it is the most applicable subject out there. Once you realize this, economics becomes very interesting. I had a general rule for studying when I started a brand new topic in economics;

Learn the law/rule/theory word for word,

Learn the assumptions under which this law holds

Learn who proposed it and also what school of thought they belong to (school of thoughts are very important in economics. They basically form the "lens" through which you look at problems)

Look at the example given in the book/reference material and try to apply it to your own life (for example when studying the very basic law of demand you can consider how in a sale near you prices go down so the demand for the good goes up.)

Learn its practical advantage (again lets take the law of demand. You've studied what it is now study how it applies in real life situations. The law of demand is very important for businesses especially ones with some form of competitive advantage-they know when to lower their prices so that their quantity sold goes up hence overall increasing sales. The law of demand is also important for taxation ministers, marketing managers, basic consumers etc etc)

Practice the graphs so many times that you can could draw without thinking. (there are no shortcuts here. Graphs form the backbone of economics. They need to be at your fingertips)

And lastly, see the criticism for the theory/law/rule that you are studying. (Why is it criticized? What are the points against it? Is the criticism justified?)

Once you do these steps, you'll have a very good grasp of the topic under study. Economics can seem overwhelming and confusing but take it bit by bit-one step at a time. For a recommended basic book, you'll have to ask you college for that since a different course requires different reference book(s)

Hello!

The CSS economics paper isn't particularly difficult. If you are familiar with the terms and concepts, I'll recommend you go for it. You can look at past papers and see if the questions are familiar/doable and if so then 6 months should be more than enough. You can also look through the past paper questions I have compiled and categorized by topics in the link below: http://www.cssforum.com.pk/css-optional-subjects/group-i/economics/124375-css-economics-past-papers-questions-topic.html

My general approach to attempting any paper in CSS was first giving a quick read through of the questions and marking out the ones I knew best. I then created very rough outlines at the back of the answer sheet which looked more like mental maps if I'm being honest. They helped me keep my thoughts in order and ensured that i did not miss important points later on.

I can give you an example of what a rough outline of mine would look like. Example for the question "Public sector enterprises are white elephant for the economy." Discuss as how privatization can play a positive role to address this issue? (2015) I would make an outline at the back that looked somewhat like this;

What is privatization?
General Advantages?
More competition, more efficiency, better services and quality, more incentive for innovation, lower prices, less corruption, removes red tape, more profit generation, meritorious appointments, removes short term goals (government officials look at next elections), reduction of public debt (selling non-profit public firms can help government reduce debt burden and also get rid of firms for which most of the debt was gotten)

Special portion on how specifically privatization helps remove "white elephant" enterprises (basically a rewording of the advantages)
White elephants in Pakistan and recommendations when it comes to privatization policies
Closing remarks

I added graphs, flowcharts and diagrams as often as I could. They give a visual aid and thought they are not allowed in the essay paper, they help your other papers stand out. Also I would recommend you keep the marks allocation in mind. Each question is 20 marks so don't waste time on the first question or two and compromise your latter ones. Try to stick to the point and be logical and analytical. I've not come across any resource that has solved economics past papers so i can't help you there but I hope the above gave you a general idea of how a social science question is approached. It's less theory and more practical.
