postmodernism is one type of critical theory that focuses on 'how modernism is not the solution for our problems'

Postmoderinism is critical of everything from reality to truth we perceived as in our life. They say truth that came to us is one sided story or power knowledge nexus.

critical theory include constructivism, postmodernism and Feminism. basically critical theory criticize classical theories (realism, liberalism and Marxism) for its fundamental assumptions of sovereignty, class struggle, anarchy etc and identifies certain gaps and say that those theories oversimplify the reality which is in fact much more complex. post modernism look beyond states (as modernism is the era of states) and emphasize role of non-state actors, societies in shaping policy. To postmodernists, states are declining and are not unitary actors and thus are not rational. states are just abstractions which only exist as imaginary, borders b/w states are not real existing realities like mountains, rivers or oceans. so if states are abstractions then postmodernists claim that there is no such thing as national interest, it is just imagined by leaders and individuals.

To my best of knowledge, critical theory is more like an approach than a theory. It includes several different theories, for example, feminism, constructivism and post-modernism. The net effect of all these theories is ultimately the contribution made by critical theory in a wholesome manner.
