Organization of Islamic Conference


• The Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) is the second largest inter-governmental organization after the United Nations which has membership of 57 states spread over four continents.
• The Organization was established upon a decision of the historical summit which took place in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco on 12th Rajab 1389 Hijra (25 September 1969) as a result of criminal arson of Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied Jerusalem.
• Currently, Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu of Turkey is the ninth Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference.
• The Organization is composed of the following main bodies:
The Islamic Summit, composed of Kings and Heads of State and Government of Member States, is the supreme authority of the Organization. It convenes once every three years to deliberate, take policy decisions and provide guidance on all issues pertaining to the realization of the objectives and consider other issues of concern to the Member States and the Ummah.
The Council of Foreign Ministers, which meets once a year, considers the means for the implementation of the general policy of the Organization by:

a. Adopting decisions and resolutions on matters of common interest in the implementation of the objectives and the general policy of the Organization;

b. Reviewing progress of the implementation of the decisions and resolutions adopted at the previous Summits and Councils of Foreign Ministers;

The General Secretariat, which is the executive organ of the Organization, entrusted with the implementation of the decisions of the two preceding bodies.

Objectives
• Enhance and consolidate the bonds of fraternity and solidarity among the Member States
• Safeguard and protect the common interests and support the legitimate causes of the Member States and coordinate and unify the efforts of the Member States in view of the challenges faced by the Islamic world in particular and the international community in general
• Respect the right of self-determination and non-interference in the domestic affairs and to respect sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of each Member State
• Ensure active participation of the Member States in the global political, economic and social decision-making processes to secure their common interests
• Reaffirm its support for the rights of peoples as stipulated in the UN Charter and international law
• Strengthen intra-Islamic economic and trade cooperation; in order to achieve economic integration leading to the establishment of an Islamic Common Market;
• Exert efforts to achieve sustainable and comprehensive human development and economic well-being in Member States
• Protect and defend the true image of Islam, to combat defamation of Islam and encourage dialogue among civilizations and religions
• Enhance and develop science and technology and encourage research and cooperation among Member States in these fields

Specialized Institutions And Organs

1. Islamic Development Bank (IDB)
• Inaugurated in 20 October, 1975
• The Bank's Headquarters is in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
2. Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO)
• Established in 1981
• The Headquarters of ISESCO is in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco.
3. Islamic Broadcasting Union (IBU)
• Established in July 1975
• The Islamic Broadcasting Union (IBU) is in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
4. International Islamic News Agency (IINA)
• Established in March 1972
• The Headquarters of the Agency is located in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Affiliated Institutions

1. Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI)
• Approved in October 1977
• The Headquarters of the ICCI is in Karachi, Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
2. Organization of Islamic Capitals and Cities (OICC)
• Established in 1980
• Its headquarters is located in the holy capital ‘Makkah Al-Mukarramah’, and the offices of its General Secretariat are located in the city of Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

3. Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF)
• Established on 6 May 1985
• The Headquarters of the Federation is in Prince Faisal Bin Fahd Olympic Complex in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

4. Islamic Committee of the International Crescent (ICIC)
• Established on May 1977
• The Headquarters of the Committee is in Benghazi, the Great Libyan People's Arab Socialist Jamahiriya

5. World Federation of Arabo-Islamic International Schools (WFAIIS)
• Approved in May 1976
• The Federation Headquarters is in Cairo, Egypt. It has Regional Offices in Madinah (Saudi Arabia), Peshawar (Pakistan), and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia)

6. Organization of the Islamic Shipowners Association (OISA)
• Established in 1981
• The Association has its headquarters in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

7. Islamic Conference Youth Forum for Dialogue and Cooperation (ICYF-DC)
• Established in 2004
• Headquarters are resided in Istanbul at the Istanbul World Trade Center

8. International Union of Muslim Scouts (IUMS)
• Recognized in December 1995
• The Headquarters is in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

9. Federation of Consultants from Islamic Countries (FCIC)
• It was officially established in 1986 in Istanbul
• The Headquarters is in Istanbul, Turkey

10. Islamic World Academy of Sciences (IAS)
• Established in 1986
• The Headquarters is in Amman, Jordan

11. General Council for Islamic Banks and Financial Institutions (CIBAFI)
12. Federation of Contractors from Islamic Countries (FOCIC)
13. OIC Computer Emergency Response Team (OIC-CERT)
14. Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC)
