So, Applied and Pure Maths, now each 100?

Salam Alaykum!

So I have this PDF file opened which shows the syllabus for 2016 examinations and it seems that applied and pure maths have now been converted into 100 each and now a mathematics enthusiast, will have to pick both of them , inorder to make a 200 score from the group ? :|

Please guide me and correct me if I am wrong, I am fairly new to the site and it's been supposedly less than a week since I have been aspired for CSS!

Yes, they have to opt both of them.

Gotam Friday, May 15, 2015 03:59 AM

Not necessarily. They can opt for any combination of 200 marks.

Yes, but if you have chosen one mathematics subject.
I feel one is naturally going to select the other mathematics variation, because one of the subject is difficult, thus naturally, you'll develop skills in mathematics that'd make you want to select the other one too.

But, that's my assumption, perhaps my view would change when I actually start studying and analyzing the syllabus, haha.

the intersection of app math and pure math is an empty set. be careful.

Applied Mathematics and Pure Mathematics

If you're planning to opt both of the aforementioned subjects(in the thread), you will be in "grave danger" in near future.

Like seriously!? How could you manage to prepare eleven different subjects lying in the vicinity of both of those subjects?

Although I have an Engineering degree, and also I am pretty much good at mathematics(sounds more like humble-bragging, but ignore that and focus on the gist), I fear to opt both of them.

Applied mathematics is manageable. However, for pure mathematics, you have to scratch your head a lot, for it is not trivial. During this whole process, you may lose 40% of your hair as well bro. lol

Wish Applied mathematics/Pure mathematics could be of 200 marks, but 100 marks for such a gigantic syllabus is quite unfair.

Better is to opt something else. Think gazillion times before opting this subject.

Regards.

DISCLAIMER: I do not have any bad experience in the past regarding mathematics. In fact, I consider mathematics the best of all, but FPSC has made its worth a penny. Quite unfortunate!

Well if Mathematics is your forte!
You take Two Mathematics in your Alevels ( Standard and Further )
And then you opt for Double Math in BS.C that lasts for 2 yrs.
Wouldn't you be competent enough to take on those two ?
I understand that Engineering wouldn't teach you purely maths as every engineering field have different sub topics , but they all may contains bits of Math.
The other subjects require some daily effort in my opinion, if you have a passion and interest, I think you can do them.
English especially, is something a CSS aspirant should daily strive to improve on.

Regarding the disclaimer, yes it's true... I don't know how can Mathematics help me in any CSS post apart from finance, but mathematics is an overall great tool that would come in handy at times in life, in my opinion.

Regarding Engineering

I do not have any say about whether you are going to opt both of them or not, but the proposition that Engineering would not teach you purely mathematics is utterly baseless.

As for Engineering is concerned, we are taught the following:
1) Calculus 1 (30% of pure mathematics)
2) Calculus 2 (50% pure mathematics)
3) Linear Algebra ( 10% pure mathematics)
4) Differential Equations (20% ofApplied mathematics)
5) Introduction to mathematical Physics for Engineers (30% of Applied mathematics)
6) Numerical Analysis (20% of Applied mathematics)

Vector analysis is the part of advanced courses like Electricity and Magnetism etc.

All of he above six courses are taught in (good) Engineering universities as the 3-credit-hour course.

Rest 5-10% of each paper one can easily do at home.

Anyway, I found it necessary to make the myths regarding Engineering and less-mathematics more just-change-the-bulbs-of-a-home clear.

Best of luck for your optional subjects. I'm sure you will ace them if you are dedicated and have ample time at your disposal.

Regards.

Yes options are there but the member had asked particularly about math combination. :)

I have also opted for both Pure and Applied Math. As far as applied maths is concerned, I have already covered 100% syllabus in university(with numerical analysis, 30% of applied math in CSS, at masters level).

As for pure maths, I have studied 50% at bachelor level. I am confident that with some prep, I can cover the rest of pure maths.

The thing is, if you are strong at maths, you can take it on. Seeing pure maths past papers gives me creeps but I believe I can put great hard work where my interest lies and that is maths. I'm sad that it will only yield me 200/600 :(
