I think you have missed some words in the question . because according to your question 2/5 of the total salary is saved which is already given in the question.

Let his total salary be represented by 1
He gave to his mother= 1/6
He is now left with = 5/6 (Since 1/6 + 5/6 = 6/6 =1)
He saves 2/5 of his salary --- of means multiply --- so its 2/5 x 5/6 = 10/30 = 1/3
So he saves 1/3
If the question asked what percent, the answer would be 33.33% but it asks what fraction which means we stop at 1/3 and put it as the answer. Hope it helps.
