@capricorn

If you've decided to opt statistics, then start preparing from today. Because the syllabus is quite lengthy as it includes theory as well.

For starting the preparation check the topics which you might have studied at B.Com,i.e. Basic Probability, correlation/regression and sampling etc. As you might have done these topics in B.Com so you'll easily understand it's theory as well. so first have a good practice of theory and numericles of these topics.

Then start Special distributions (binomial,poisson,negative binomial, hypergeometric and normal) and statistical inference (maximum liklihood, hypothesis testing and ANOVA etc). For this first read the theory and then go for numeric practice.

PROBABILITY & STATISTICS FOR ENGINEERS AND SCIENTISTS by Walpole is very good book with reference to exam preparation. It covers maximum topics.

Regards,

Q from Mam Qurratulain:

I would like to know that why didn't u opt for Statistics as optional paper? After going through ur valuable posts and suggestions/refrences/material sources I am at loss to understand ur choice of papers. Plz don't take it as an attempt to criticize rather it wil b an eye opening for us in assessing our potential+subject selection.

@Raz

I did opt stats as one of my optional in 2006 and failed in it (30), I'd have gone for the option further but after an in depth analysis I found I can make a better choice of Geography as it'll be helpful in some of other papers as well. And for this I'd to lose USA history as well where I scored 68.

Edit:
present combination of my optionals is based on my academic background, interest and teaching experience.

Best wishes 4 ur full n final attempt. may i know the reason behind ur failure in stats? what was ur level of understanding at time of attempting stats? which topics did u practise more n from which books/sources?can u suggest me from ur expereince?to what extent did u attempt stats i 2006?I mean the question which u were sure n satisfied while attempting 2006 paper? n ur MCQ part success? I know u might feel some bureden to recall ur memory b/c u ve switched from this paper but plz put some effort 2 solve this dilemma. Just describe main flaws in ur paper which caused ur failure, so that we can learn a lesson n try our level best not to repeat these mistakes again. thx Qurratulain Mam

Raz,

thanks for the wishes, so nice and kind of you! Well, my failure was because of only and only 'time', actually the attempt as a whole was not planned well, I started preparing by the end of Feb, while exams were to be held in May-June. I'd have done quite good if I were to study only but Job, toughest written work of B.Ed, and research proposal for M.phil all were on the way. I couldn't quit any of them though I tried to manage all at maximum. It was over all scenario. Besides that for stats, I can recall my memories I didn't give time to theory till the extent I should have (though m' still very good at stats if I've to teach probability, hypothesis etc), I prepared from the sources I mentioned above and. Paper was a bit lengthy, but not that difficult. I really don't remember whether my MCQs part went well or not, as I got the consolidated marks on mark sheet. I mentioned the reason of my failure above, and will suggest following from my experience:

DO NOT OPT STATISTICS IF:

You cannot give proper time to it.
You've not studied it earlier (having stats as a part of your graduation or master syllabus is different to that of STUDYING it)
You feel you're excellent at calculations but not good at theory.
