Kindly have a look at some good historical reference book of the city for the exact history. B.t.w, I had also looked for the forts of Pakistan a couple of months back :). However, what I can recollect, the fort is built on a ridge, which was used by many kingdoms for making small fortresses or a big forts. There was a fort here even when Mahmood Ghaznavi defeated hindu shahi kingdom Raja Jaipal.

Fort which might had been built by Zaheer ud Din Babar on this place was destroyed by the Sher Shah Suri and another fort was constructed soon by Hamayun. But it waxed and waned, a big fort was later on constructed on the ridge by the Durrani empire kings and it was named Balahisar and used as a summer palace/fort. There is big balahisar fort at Kabul, which was built by Durranis and since both cities were under the domain of Durrani empire so they preferred to use same name of Balahisar Fort, for both of forts.

After capturing Peshawar, Sikhs reconstructed a grand fort and named it Sumer Garh, but that name was not used later on. The fort faced lot of hardships and destructions and the current shape of fort was given to it by the British government when they captured the city after destroying the Sikh empire.

Roughly, current construction date may be 1850s and this name might had been given in late eighteenth century.. . Now it is FC HQ.
