Sultan Shamsuddin Iltutmish introduced a governing class of Turkish nobility known as Chahlgani or Chalisa (a group of 40). This became a powerful group in later years and used to decide fate of the Kingdom /Sultan.

Sultan Balban was also a member of Chahlgani and initially remained defacto king at the time of Nasiruddin (grandson of Iltutimish) and actively became sultan in 1266. Balban also used Chalgani nobility to consolidate his power and also sent away some powerful anti Chalgani nobles...
