Sultan Shamsuddin Iltutmish introduced a governing class of Turkish nobility known as Chahlgani or Chalisa (a group of 40). This became a powerful group in later years and used to decide fate of the Kingdom /Sultan. Sultan Balban was also a member of Chahlgani and initially remained defacto king at the time of Nasiruddin (grandson of Iltutimish) and actively became sultan in 1266.
