I've recently started preparing for US history from the Majumdar book as that's the one everyone on this forum recommends but I found it containing factual errors and hard to concentrate upon due to the way the book is written and the hand-wavy and unconvincing explanations the book provides (granted I'm on the first chapter, so if the book gets better after this do tell as I'm willing to power through the initial pages if that's the case) which left me disheartened.

On the subject of "People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn, although oft recommended on this forum I found it to be more of an (alt) left political narrative than a history textbook. It is more concerned with presenting the alternate side of the conventional reading of history rather than an unbiased study of history. The author himself says that the text he wrote is biased and is more concerned with presenting "his" (by that he means the Liberal side as opposed to the Conservative side) of the story rather than an accurate description of history. Most reviewers also seem to have a consensus that this book should only be read if you've studied US history before and are looking for an alternate way of viewing things rather than making it your main introduction to US history.

This is why I am requesting you to recommend to me a US history book which is somewhat concise (~800 pages) and relatively unbiased and preferably by a foreign author as their writing style is generally more mature than Pakistani/Indian authors.

i am too reading this book and i will not recommend this book to anyone.. first it has errors second it is not useful to them who is reading usa history first time... i heard from many people usa history is very easy but a lot of dates, treaties and names of famous people are difficult to memorize.. someone suggest me some other book or some good notes.. otherwise i am finding very difficult this subject :(

You can download one of these two books if you have an ample time to study:
1. The American Pageant by Thomas A. Bailey.
2. The Unfinished Nation: A Concise History of the American People by Alan Brinkley.

Note: Both of them are huge and lengthy books but if someone wants a quality material to grasp the US history comprehensively then these are the books to read. Even a single book is fairly enough. I personally prefer the 1st one.

If you want a brief history and are already short of time then you may consult "An outline of American History" published by US Information Agency.

I am preparing from these 4 sources:

1) [I]U.S History for Dummies[/I] by Steve Wiegand (concise, readable, well-structured and covers all important events from what I've read so far)

2) [I]These Truths: A History of the United States[/I] (covers all important events and dates, quotes historically relevant people, but also provides some commentary particularly on slavery which you can skip if you want)

3) History dot com: This is a truly amazing website for preparation.

4) Khanacademy: Another valuable Internet source.

I have abandoned [I]A People's History[/I] precisely because it was more of a narrative written in favor of the oppressed and the victims of the entire history of US.

I will recommend AP US history along with internet sources. Majmudar's book does not contain contemporary topics and is quite difficult to understand for a novice in US history. Khan academy is also a good source but its lectures sometimes gets boring for a self preparing individual.

Alan's Brinkley's 'The Unfinished Nation'. Its is a comprehensive book with maps and charts. But this book will require at least a month to complete. The language and jargon of this book is interesting and not verbose like books of majumdar
