US History Vol I & II by Majumdar
Brief History of United States of America by John J Newman
A People's History of the United States, 1492-Present by Howard Zinn
&
National Officers Academy Notes

and that's all u need to master the subject . Even one book can do the trick but i would suggest you to go through at least two books.
