Trees play an important role in water cycle. They take in water and return it to the atmosphere as vapor (respiration, transpiration) or to the soil as liquid (excretion)

Trees regulate the earth's water supply by holding water like natural sponges.

Rain first falls on leaves and plants rather than directly hitting the ground soil, decreasing the rate soil erosion and runoff.

Forests help regulate the water through transpiration. They absorb water into their roots and transport it into the branches and leaves for food through the trunk. Excess water is then released through the leaves back into the air. When enough moisture is transpired into the air, rain starts and the water cycle begins all over again.

Trees help improve water quality by filtering out impurities that could be potentially harmful in streams or groundwater. As water is absorbed by tree roots and then transpired to leaves, impurities (many of which are good for a tree) remain in the tree.
