The phenomena of growing trees on farm lands is called Social forestry in general and farm forestry in particular. Agro-forestry refers to cultivation, grazing , tree growing (Agro-silvo-pastoral activity) on the same UNIT of land.

Default thanks for correction

thanks for correction but still i am not satisfied from the 1st one as agroforestry is the planting of tree in a farm or cultivated land & social forestry is tree planting for the beneficial purpose to the local people as these trees provide timber fuel income etc,& these are not grown specfically in a farm areas...hmmmm?

Default Sure why not....

Let us make it clear this way:

Social forestry is a broader term that means Forestry of the people, for the people and by the people. Therefore, the involvement of people in the management of forest either on ther own area or the government land is termed as social forestry. Within the social forestry head there are various sub concepts e.g JFM (Joint Forest Management), Participatory forestry, community forestry, agro-forestry and farm forestry.

JFM management refers to the management of government forests in collaboration with the local communities. Community forestry is a synonym if the forests are in rural areas and if in urban areas, the phenomena is called urban forestry e.g cantonment forests of Rawalpindi.

Now comes the concept of farm forestry. Just as we have farms of livestock or agriculture crops, the marginal areas are planted with tree species with the intent of trees only. These are used for generating income from trees and rest assured that there is no agriculture in farm forestry.

Finally comes the concept of agro-forestry in which Grazing, Tree planting at the borders of the agricultural species and the grazing of animals are carried out simultaneously or interchangeably and is technically termed as Agro-silvopastoral-activity.

Thus agro-forestry is practised in collaboration with agriculture on the same land while farm forestry is purely aimed at growing trees. Since, there was no option of farm forestry in the paper, we could safely opt for Social Forestry.

I hope it clarifies the concept...still, if there is room for further queries.
