Beginner in Englsih Literature : Suggest a simple book to start with

I want to study english literature on my own. As I am not very much into old english style (art, thou type english). So can any one suggest me a simple book to start with. I mean by studying this book, I could comprehend english literature.

I need a starting point. So what you suggest for a begginer?

@ newstudent

English Literature is so vast and everyone will suggest you to read things according to one's own taste. So ,at first you are to decide what are you interested in?

Novel
Drama
Poetry or
Prose

Then
Tragic , Romantic or political literature ?

Old Classics or New ?

Shakespeare is appreciated by all but is a bit complicated to start with (difficult language).Personally, I like Bernard Shaw due to his humour & socio-political outlook. While Oscar Wilde's language always inspires me.

I think novel would be better to start with. Which novel you would suggest?

Dear newstudent.,

You may want to start with George Orwell's 1984. (Download Link)

As I mentioned earlier everyone suggests according to his/her own taste and I don't know what type of literature ( tragic ,comic, romantic, political) you'd like. Moreover I'm not a voracious reader ;I have read few suggested works of some writers.Very often I start a book and leave it halfway.Same happened with the '1984'.That's why I was confused.
Anyways, do read 'Animal Farm' ,after 1984, an interesting work by George Orwell .
