Explain these lines please
Hello all! Hope you are doing well.
Please help me understand the following lines from Oliver Goldsmith's poem The Deserted Village: "Ill fares the land, to hastening ills a prey Where wealth accumulates, and men decay" A short summary or explanation can help make out the meaning of the lines. Please help. Thanks |
rework the syntax!
Haven't read O. Goldsmith myself, but the decoding of these lines just needs a little reworking of the syntax:
the land fares ill, (becoming) a prey to hastening ills (that land) where wealth accumulates, and men decay (because of the accumulation of wealth) |
