The 'Ability' part will definitely improve analytical skills, necessary to pass CSS with flying colours. This time and from now on, all papers will be more analytical.

Environmental Sciences has become a totally independent subject in the past few years which offers its own doctorate. The preparation of the new version of EDS will not help you much in ES, but preparing ES will definitely equip you with everything you need to answer around 10% of new EDS paper: (60 marks science part is divided into 5 sections, 1 being Environment). Simply put, yes they'd reinforce each others' preparation.
