[B]The Skin and Its Functions[/B]

The skin is far more than just the outer covering of human beings; it is an organ just like the heart, lung, or liver. Besides providing a layer of protection from pathogens, physical abrasions, and radiation from the sun, the skin serves many functions as well as playing a vital role in homeostasis. This includes maintaining a constant body temperature via the acts of sweating or shivering and by making you aware of external stimuli through information perceived within the touch receptors located within the integumentary system. It only takes one visit to a burn unit to see the value of skin and the many complications that arise when this organ is compromised.


The skin, or integument, is considered an organ because it consists of two tissues: epithelial and connective. In addition, accessory organs, such as glands, hair, and nails, are present, and together with the skin make up the [B]integumentary system[/B] . A section of skin with various accessory organs is shown in Figure 1 .

The skin consists of two layers, the [B]epidermis[/B] and the underlying [B]dermis[/B] . Although technically not part of the skin, the [B]hypodermis[/B] (subcutaneous layer, or superficial fascia) lies beneath the dermis.
[B]The skin performs a variety of functions:[/B]
[FONT=Symbol]·[/FONT]Protection is provided against biological invasion, physical damage, and ultraviolet radiation.
[FONT=Symbol]·[/FONT]Sensation for touch, pain, and heat is provided by nerve endings.
[FONT=Symbol]·[/FONT]Thermoregulation is supported through the sweating and regulation of blood flow through the skin.
[FONT=Symbol]·[/FONT]Metabolism of vitamin D occurs in the skin.
[FONT=Symbol]·[/FONT]Storage of blood that can be shunted to other parts of the body when needed takes place in the skin.
[FONT=Symbol]·[/FONT]Excretion of salts and small amounts of wastes (ammonia and urea) occurs with the production of sweat.

Wasalam.
For this purpose you can just copy the notes and paste on MS word and you can convert this Word document into pdf version as well.
Or you can just print the thread,but there are some links and presentations on Scribd for which you have to make an account on scribd and study them online or just download them for your convenience.

The easiest way would be just to copy the notes on MS Word and for the links study them online and note down the important points on your note book .

No,you must consult books and any other material that is relevant.These are actually not notes but material/links/diagrams from net arranged at one place,you can search for yourself for the material as well.

I have been asked about this before as well ,but i dont have PDF version of this,i had some of it as word document.I have to check if i still have it,will let you know.
All of it cannot be made PDF as i have added links in it.

I could not find the document , you would have to rely on the notes directly from the Forum.If you have time you can arrange them into Word document and then convert it into PDF format.
