what is philosophy ???
how can we give an intro of philosophy to someone who is new to this subject

Philosophy is the faculty of wonder. Which is very common in children because they are not used to the world as we grown ups are.

to put it more gently Philosophy to live a thoughtful life, and try to find the answers that are normally scorned.

Philosophy is somewhat related to reasoning man applies to his own existence. Philosophers try to find out the reasons behind man's life as to what is nature and its relationship with man. They ponder in the nature and seek to find out the hidden realities of it. In other words we can say that, human endeavour to understand the purpose of his life and the connection between him and environment is philosophy.

I opted Philosophy in CSS 2012 this was my first attempt i don't know what will be the result......
I went through the past papers n i found 3 books which i felt relevant and can give u best marks
1: Introduction to logic by Irving M. Copi and Carl Cohen for paper 1
2: philosophy made simple by Richard H. Popkin, PhD and Avrum Stroll, PhD( only Contemporary Philosophy part of book)
and History of Muslim Philosophy both volumes
for paper 2
i can give u list of 12 questions if u prepare these both papers are done....
for paper 1
i: Logic and kinds of logic(with special reference to Aristotelian logic & Induction, Deduction, Argument, Statement, Definition, Truth and Validity)
ii: fallacy
iii: Symbolic Logic
iv: Probability in Logic

for paper 2

i: Idealism(Hegel, Berkeley and others)
ii: Dialectical Idealism & Materialism(Hegel's dialectics and Marx's dialectic)
iii: Existentialism
iv: Positivism
v: Pragmatism
vi: Iqbal's Philosophy & Sir Syed.
vii: Al-Farabi's Philosophy
vii: Ethics(A.J. Ayer's, Imannual Kant and others
short notes also come from these topics specially from isms

these are most important topics to be prepared well for better marks according to best of my knowledge.
Logic is base
ethics and other isms are extensions of philosophy
one should consult History of Muslim Philosophy both volumes for less chances of being faint during the paper so do consult History of Muslim Philosophy it will support u.....

Best of Luck....
Thanks to my Philosophy Teacher Brig.(R) Prof. Dr Ehsan ur Rehman who introduced philosophy to me n i found its so easy n people feel fear of it

if u r still interested after reading these notes please do ask me for paper 2 material i will send :))

MuhammadAliSubhani Wednesday, August 01, 2012 12:12 AM

Its more than Easy

yes sure!
its so simple once u have read these notes u will feel no requirement for second reading simple maths rules apply in "symbolic logic"
if u have read journalism "fallacies" are same as tools of propaganda
logic is based on reasoning, reasoning is composed of argument, argument is a compound of propositions, proposition is of two types premise and conclusion. an argument with 3 propositions is called as syllogism and also known as Aristotelian logic in syllogism there are 2 premises and one conclusion.
this is all about philosophy paper 1 if u can understand ur paper is done
in addition to these topics do read Muslim's contribution to logic with special reference to al farabi bu ali sina and others.....

Philosophy is not any type of rocket science..... :)
