Default Geo B- 2008 Ques- Need help

Q-To what extent can major features of the world population distribution be understood in term of physical environment? Discuss with special reference to South Asia?

Can someone provide me with an outline about what exactly to write in this question?
OR
Refer me to a book which has the answer to this, Deblij does not shed light on this aspect of population?

Thanks!

I reckon it refers to population settlements on river basins and coasts, because of their economic viability. You have to shed on major population clusters in South Asia like Ganges Brahmaputra region, Indus Plain etc

Also since physical environment includes other features like mountainous terrains , forests, plains etc which may also encourage population settlements because of their life sustaining attributes. So you can also mention regions where people have decided to live because of Primary economic activities.Like for instance forests provide game, wood, fruits or land for cultivation. Similarly, mountains can have mineral deposits, spurring industrial and economic growth, thus serving as suitable regions for people to inhabt.

here you have to draw a map where it needs to be proved that in south asia major rivers like the ganges and indus are the major areas where population is denser than other areas like mountanious region. moreover, you have to give a short note that population in hot climate is denser than cold climatic regions in south asia.

The question relates to the factors affecting population distribution like physical factors, economic factors, social factors and political factors.
But in this question we have to describe the features of distribution of South Asian Population cluster in the perspective of Physical factors.
physical factors affecting population distribution are:
1. Topography:Surface relief or altitude
a. Mountains
b. Plateaus
c. plains(south Asia)
d. land area.
e. water area.
2.Character of soil.
Hence the south Asian population cluster is dictated by the physical factors of plain areas, having transportation and communication facilities, fertile river valleys of indo-Gangnetic plain, irrigation facilities due to plain surface areas and availability of river waters.
