There is a difference between a function and a purpose.

both can be easily misunderstood.however, there lies a difference

simply, for the fulfilment of purpose one must function properly and effectively.

for example : For a Hotel Chef, cooking a meal is his function, but to ensure health of the customers and to make the meal healthy and attractive is the purpose of the restaurant.and to fulfil the purpose of the restaurant chef has to perform his function in an effective manner.

for Advertisment:

the Purpose is to increase the customers.on the other hand, customers can be increased by the proper functioning of the product to be advertise.

PURPOSE

to increase the demand of the product
to increase the number of customers
to try to eliminate other brands
to create an identifiable brand name

Functions

to make people aquire the product
creation of desire
to attract people
creation of interest for the product.
