like in b.a or masters........

Yes you can on the basis of your interest and aptitude for that subject. But Do not forget to go through course contents and past papers of that subject. It will help you to be more confident in your choice.

In CSS exams we recommended to pick optional papers of 600 marks.
No one here who studied all 12 or at least optional papers.
These subjects should be related to our own interest and taste.
I done Master in Pure Mathematics but I never want to choose math as my optional paper.

Application for CSS are invited from 01 October to 31 October every yer followed by an advertisement in newspaper in the month of September.
